Boeing Pilot Dies Mid Flight, Emergency Landing Activated

A pilot died in the bathroom of a LATAM Boeing 787 while flying from Miami to Chile.

As soon as the co-pilots discovered the pilot died, they quickly enacted an emergency landing in Panama.

The pilot was identified as 56-year-old Ivan Andaur and according to a nurse on board who attempted to revive him, Andaur died of symptoms related to cardiac arrest.

LATAM Airlines in a statement wrote “On August 14, 2023, flight LA505 (Miami – Santiago) diverted to Tocumen International Airport in Panama due to a medical emergency of one of the three members of the crew in command. Unfortunately, after landing and receiving further medical assistance, the pilot passed away.”

This is the third time in a week a pilot has died while flying:

Per The Daily Mail:

A pilot collapsed and died in the lavatory of a LATAM Boeing 787 Dreamliner flying from Miami to Chile, forcing his two co-pilots to make an emergency landing in Panama City.

Iván Andaur, 56, was piloting flight LA505 from Miami International Airport to Santiago on Sunday night when he started to feel unwell and collapsed in the toilet.

Two co-pilots took control of the aircraft and landed at Tocumen International Airport, where paramedics provided first aid to Andaur, but he was pronounced dead.

A registered nurse, identified only as Isadora on social media, said she joined another nurse and two doctors in an attempt to revive the pilot after he suffered symptoms related to cardiac arrest.

While she says the crew did their utmost to try and help, she claims the improvised medical team did not have ‘necessary or sufficient supplies’ to resuscitate him.

Per NBC News:

A veteran pilot for a Chilean airline died after a mid-flight medical emergency, the airline said.

The pilot was one of three crew members in command, Latam Airlines said.

The flight Monday from Miami to Santiago, Chile, was diverted to Tocumen International Airport in Panama because of a “medical emergency of one of the three members of the crew,” Latam said Wednesday in a statement.

The pilot, who was not publicly identified, died after the plane landed and he received further medical assistance, Latam said.

“LATAM Group is deeply saddened by this event and takes this opportunity to express our most sincere condolences to the family of our employee. We are thankful for his 25 years of service to LATAM, distinguished by his dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm,” the airline said.
