Massive Explosion at Texas Dairy Farm

A large explosion and fire occurred at a dairy farm in Dimmitt, Texas Monday evening.

Castro County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) reported multiple calls of an explosion and fire at the Southfork Dairy Farm at around 7:21 p.m.

The incident reportedly sent one woman to the hospital and trapped multiple employees inside one of the buildings.

Multiple agencies and emergency crews responded to the scene.

The large mushroom cloud that formed after the explosion could reportedly be seen as far as 80 miles away.

KFDA reported:

Castro County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said about 7:21 p.m. on Monday, they received eight calls about an explosion and fire at the Southfork Dairy Farm. More calls said that some of the employees were trapped inside the dairy milking building.

When CCSO arrived at the dairy farm, they determined only one person was in the dairy building.

Dimmitt and Hart fire departments located and brought the person out of the building.

Officials said the person was treated and was flown to UMC Hospital in Lubbock for further treatment. The person was listed as critical.

All of the other dairy employees were accounted for, officials said.

The fire spread into the dairy cow holding pens, and an unknown amount of dairy cattle were killed by the fire and smoke.

Dimmitt, Hart, and Nazareth fire crews worked to clear the building and extinguish fires. Tulia, Springlake-Earth, Muleshoe, Lamb County, Swisher County, and Bailey County first responders also assisted.

According to AgDay and U.S. Farm Report Lubbock affiliate KJTV, details are still limited about what caused the explosion, but Aero-care was on the scene.  The Castro County Sheriff also confirmed one woman was transported to a Lubbock hospital.

Railey Silhan, who lives in Morton, Tex., says the cloud of smoke from the explosion could be seen from her area, which is 80 miles southwest of Dimmitt.
