There are bizarre crime stories, and then there is this.
An Indiana man is facing a felony arson charge after police say he admitted to cutting off his own penis, pouring gasoline on it and setting it on fire inside a Fort Wayne garage.
The allegation is every bit as disturbing as it sounds.

The incident allegedly happened on May 6, but the details only emerged this week after 36-year-old Christopher Peden appeared in court and the probable-cause allegations became public.
21Alive reported that Fort Wayne firefighters were sent to a garage fire at roughly the same time police were responding to a reported stabbing.
Court records obtained by the local station say Peden initially told officers that someone had stabbed him somewhere in downtown Fort Wayne. He also claimed that a person had threatened him the previous day.
After being taken to a hospital, however, Peden allegedly told an officer that he had been dishonest and wanted to tell the truth. He reportedly said he went into the garage around 2 a.m., used a kitchen knife to mutilate himself and then poured gasoline over the severed organ before igniting it.
A fire investigator reportedly recovered a gasoline container, four lighters and a kitchen knife from the garage. The court records cited by 21Alive do not say whether the severed organ was found.
Prosecutors charged Peden with one count of Level 4 felony arson. The local report says the charge carries a possible sentence of up to 12 years in prison.

The chronology described in the affidavit is almost as strange as the act itself.
The Smoking Gun published the two-page probable-cause filing and reported that the garage belonged to Peden’s mother. The affidavit places the burning object on the garage floor just inside the door.
According to the filing, the homeowners were awakened by a neighbor who had spotted the fire. They soon realized that Peden, a family member, was missing from the property.
Police then encountered Peden while responding to the stabbing report. Investigators reportedly realized that the purported stabbing victim and the person missing from the fire scene were the same man.
The affidavit says Peden later admitted leaving the garage and walking away until he encountered police. It does not identify a motive, describe the full extent of his injuries or explain why he allegedly harmed himself.
The records surfaced after Peden’s initial court appearance in July, weeks after the May fire. He posted $10,000 bond and was released from custody ahead of a July 13 hearing.
That hearing is expected to address scheduling for the next stage of the criminal case.

TMZ spoke with Peden’s attorney, David Felts, who said his client was in stable condition while the defense gathered information.
Felts described the allegations as concerning and said he was examining Peden’s mental state at the time of the incident. The attorney did not offer a public explanation for what may have precipitated the alleged act.
TMZ also confirmed Friday that Peden was no longer in the Allen County Jail after posting bond. That means the criminal case is moving forward while he remains out of custody under the conditions set by the court.
The arson charge concerns the garage fire, but the reported conduct plainly raises a second and more urgent question: what mental or medical crisis could lead someone to inflict an injury this extreme?
For now, neither the court filing nor the public statements from Peden’s attorney answer that question.
Peden has been charged, not convicted. The allegations against him must still be proved in court.
This comes on the heels of another “cut off his penis” incident that made headlines again just a few days earlier.

The New York Post reported July 4 that a newly released Los Angeles County medical examiner’s report identified the man in that separate case as 31-year-old Ryan Dexter Sutherland. The Los Angeles incident itself happened March 7 near Figueroa Street and Pico Boulevard.
The medical examiner ruled Sutherland’s death a suicide caused by multiple sharp-force injuries. Toxicology testing also found methamphetamine and MDMA in his system, according to the report summarized by the Post.
That fatal Los Angeles case and the Indiana allegations involve different men. The California findings were reported only days before the allegations against Christopher Peden became public.
