This is absolutely terrible.
A 40-year-old mother in Indiana was shot and killed while protecting her son from an armed robber last week.
This brave mom’s name was Jean Gragg. Her son had struck a deal with 18-year-old John Ford on Facebook Marketplace to sell him a watch.
Ford visited the Gragg’s own home. But, when Gragg’s son tried to make the exchange, Ford pulled out a gun and tried to steal the watch, instead.
Like any good mother would do, Gragg stepped between them, putting herself in front of the gun instead of her son.
WSBT reported on the fatal events that happened next:
In court documents, police say Ford was meeting a person at the location who was selling a watch. While he was looking at the watch, he brandished a firearm. Jean Gragg moved in between the 3rd person and Ford. Gragg then chased Ford away.
In court documents, surveillance footage showed Ford reaching for the watch, and Gragg was pushing and telling him to get away.
She then chased Ford, and the camera captured her walking back, and Ford could be seen firing the weapon back multiple times. The video showed Gragg falling to the ground.
Police were able to retrieve a weapon thrown over a fence, as seen in the surveillance video.
John Ford was arrested and has been charged with murder, felony murder, attempted murder, and attempted armed robbery.
Here’s John Ford’s mugshot, along with a photo of Jean Gragg:

This local news clip dove deeper into the fatal incident:
What a sad, scary, and infuriating story.
This thug needs to be locked up for life!
On another note, if you use Facebook Marketplace, this might be a good idea in the times we are living in:
Our local PD lobby is open 24hrs a day with a staff. Find out if yours is and do your online sales exchanges there.
