GOSPEL MESSAGE: The Power of the Spoken Word

Sorry this is one day late, you know I like to bring these to you on Sundays.

But better late than never, right?

From our good friend Pastor Robb:

The Power of Speaking the Word

We have the power to change our circumstances and situations by speaking the Word of God. In this teaching we will look at many scripture verses in the old and new covenant. Abraham knew the power of believing the Lord’s promises and he watched a impossible situation change because of faith.

I am a living miracle. I have dealt with living with diabetes for 58 years and some really terrible complications caused by diabetes. Many doctors have told me that I still shouldn’t be living. They have said that others have died dealings lesser complications than I’ve got. I believe in miracle and I have learned how to release my faith by speaking God’s Word.

My prayer is that Holy Spirit will give you sincere revelation knowledge concerning this message and topic. It does, in fact require discipline to practice speaking the Word of God. I pray that you will be blessed and that Holy Spirit will truly speak to you in a life changing way. Please like, comment and subscribe to my YouTube channel. May the Lord bring forth mighty changes and miracles into you!

FULL TRANSCRIPT:

Pastor Robb Goodman: Hey, good morning everybody. My name is Pastor Rob Goodman and I am the senior pastor here at Zion Freedom Fellowship in Maryland. It is a beautiful, beautiful, wonderful Mother’s Day. God is so good and he’s worthy to be praised.

And the scripture says that we will be saved from all of our enemies. Amen, all of our enemies. And God is so good and he is mighty, mighty, mighty. He is mighty, mighty, mighty, mighty. I’m doing something—my pump just buzzed. So, sorry guys. Had to do that real quick.

Anyway, I have a wonderful message for everyone today. I pray that everyone can pay close attention to the words that I have to share with you because this message is a powerful message. The Lord’s been speaking to me quite a lot about speaking the word of God.

Speaking the word of God in faith and power, you know, exercising our right as children of God to speak the word of God. And the word of God will change circumstances. The word of God will fix things. Not always the way that we expect or the way that we want, but in God’s timing and in God’s perfect way.

Everything that God does is perfect. He knows the thought of every person. He knows every circumstance from beginning to end. He sees what you and I do not see because he sees the end from the beginning. Think about that. God sees the end from the beginning.

So before we start, let’s pray. Heavenly Father, we give you praise and honor and glory today for the word of the living God. Father, I commit myself to you. Let your word go forth through my lips today in power, authority, and dominion.

Lord, let the words that I speak be accurate. Let my words be the words that you put in my mouth because you have put your words in my mouth, Lord. And I trust you to speak to your people today, to your children, that you would feed them this day.

And Lord, thank you for this beautiful Mother’s Day. We’ve got beautiful weather outside. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for all the mothers, all the wonderful mothers and all the things that they do that us men just simply can’t do. We can’t do the things that they can do.

And there’s things that they do that—there’s things that we do that they can’t do. But God is so good. A happy Mother’s Day to all of our mothers in ZFF and all the mothers around the world that are watching this today. Thank you so much for being a part of this live stream.

God is worthy. So we ask these things today in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen. And amen. All right. The title of today’s message is The Power of the Spoken Word. The Power of the Spoken Word.

And the first subject that we’re going to talk about today—you know, when I was preparing a message or thinking about it in the beginning of the week, my wife mentioned a phrase about something that happened in scripture about David numbering or counting Israel before they went out to battle.

So, we’re going to take a look at that scripture and let’s go to 1 Chronicles chapter 21. 1 Chronicles chapter 21. I’m reading out of the New King James Version here. And let me get a sip of my coffee real quick as you guys are turning in your Bibles.

All right. 1 Chronicles chapter 21 verse one. “Now Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel.” So Satan was behind this. The interesting thing is we’re going to read another passage of scripture where it says that God moved David to number Israel.

And it looked like—and you know people say that there are contradictions in the Bible all the time. Well, they are apparent contradictions. But when you study the word of God and you understand how God put his word together and Holy Spirit begins to reveal things to you that maybe you didn’t know or understand.

And I’ll share with you what the Lord shared with me about this so-called apparent misunderstanding here. All right. “Now Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel. So David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people, ‘Go number Israel from Beersheba to Dan and bring the number of them to me that I may know it.'”

And Joab answered, “May the Lord make his people a hundred times more than they are. But my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? Why then does my lord require this thing? Why should he be a cause of guilt in Israel?”

So Joab understood that David was not relying completely on the Lord to deliver them. And even Joab says, “May the Lord make—” I mean, let me read that again. And Joab answered, “May the Lord make his people a hundred times more than they are.”

Now many battles, many, many previous battles in scripture before this time, the Lord sent angels to just completely wipe out people. I mean, it’s just amazing when you think about it. I mean, look how David beat Goliath and the Philistines. I mean, it’s just unbelievable, you know?

What an incredible, incredible power of might, a story of might and power that God gives to his servants. And you and I are no different today. We are no different than the Old Covenant saints or the early New Covenant saints. We are filled with power and dominion.

Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore, Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came to Jerusalem. Then Joab gave the sum of the number of all the people to David. And Israel had 1,100,000 men who drew the sword.

And Judah had 470,000 men who drew the sword. But he did not count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab. So Joab knew something was not right about this. And God was displeased with this thing.

Therefore, he struck Israel. So David said to God, “I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing, but now I pray, take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.” So David realizes, like in many other cases, that he did the wrong thing.

Even with Bathsheba, he realized that he had done something terrible. Then the Lord spoke to Gad, David’s seer, a prophet, saying, “Go and tell David, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: I offer you three things. Choose one of them for yourself that I may do it unto you.'”

So God came to David and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, choose for yourself, either three years of famine, or three months to be defeated by your foes with the sword of your enemies overtaking you, or else for three days the sword of the Lord, the plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.”

Now consider what answer I should take back to him who sent me. Now always remember when you see a capital H in He or Him, it is always speaking directly about the Lord himself. And David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Please let me fall into the hand of the Lord for his mercies are very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”

So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel, and 70,000 men of Israel fell. 70,000 died. How awful. How awful. And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. And as he was destroying, the Lord looked and relented of the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying it, “It is enough now. Restrain your hand.”

And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. Now, this was before David actually took Jerusalem. So, this is interesting how this all happened. Then David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord standing between the earth and heaven having in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem.

So David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces. And David said to God, “Was it not I who commanded the people to be numbered? I am the one who has sinned and done evil indeed. But these sheep, what have they done?

Let your hand, I pray, oh Lord my God, be against me and my father’s house, but not against your people that they should be plagued.” Therefore, the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David that David should go and erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

So David went up at the word of Gad which he had spoken in the name of the Lord. Now Ornan turned and saw the angel and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. But Ornan continued threshing wheat. So David came to Ornan, and Ornan looked and saw David, and he went out from the threshing floor and bowed before David with his face to the ground.

Then David said to Ornan, “Grant me this place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to the Lord. You shall grant it to me at the full price that the plague may be withdrawn from my people.” But Ornan said to David, “Take it to yourself, and let my lord the king do what is good in his eyes.

Look, I also give you the oxen for burnt offerings, the threshing implements for wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I give it all.” Then King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings with that which cost me nothing.”

So David gave Ornan 600 shekels of gold by weight for the place. And David built there an altar to the Lord and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings and called on the Lord and he answered him from heaven by fire on the altar of the burnt offering.

So the Lord commanded the angel and he returned his sword to its sheath. And at that time when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there. For the tabernacle of the Lord and the altar of the burnt offering which Moses had made in the wilderness were at that time at the high place in Gibeon.

And David could not go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord. What an incredible story. And I really, you know, David’s heart always shows up. What David did sometimes was wrong, but in the end, his heart proves worthy of God’s grace and forgiveness because he cried out to the Lord and said he had done wrong.

You know, and what he did was absolutely amazing. And he said, “I will not give anything to the Lord that cost me nothing.” Think about it. Giving our lives to the Lord costs us something. It may cost relationships, friends that once adored you and loved you, but when you come to Jesus, all of a sudden it’s gone.

But what is more important in your life? That you have the favor of God or the liking of the opinion of man? What’s more important? God knows. That’s for sure. He knows. Why did David count or number Israel?

David numbered Israel due to pride, self-reliance, and a desire to measure his military strength rather than relying on the Lord. The act was incited by Satan in 1 Chronicles 21 or prompted by God’s anger in 2 Samuel 24:1. Let’s go to there real quick.

2 Samuel 24 and we are going to look at verse one. All right. “Again the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel and he moved David against them to say, ‘Go number Israel.'” Now think about that. We read in the other chapter in 1 Chronicles that David was moved by Satan.

Now again, that was an apparent contradiction but what we actually see is that 2 Samuel 24:1 signaled a shift from trusting in divine protection to trusting in human power, which was considered a serious sin and a violation of God’s kingship over the whole of Israel.

Now remember when Saul sinned against the Lord and did not kill Agag and brought all those animals back to slaughter them, Samuel told him that the kingdom was taken from him because of his disobedience. So 1 Chronicles 21 says that Satan stood up against Israel.

But 2 Samuel says that the Lord did this. Why would two different things be said here? An apparent contradiction. Holy Spirit revealed to me that the Lord allowed Satan to do this in order to test David to see what was in David’s heart.

And of course, the Lord always knows what’s in our heart, right? But David had to see what was in his heart. Amen. Our circumstances often prove or reveal what is in our heart. How do we respond? What do we say? What comes out of our mouth? How do we act?

The situation would have been different if David would have trusted in the Lord. Completely different. All right, let’s go to 1 John chapter 5. 1 John chapter 5 all the way back to the end of the New Covenant. 1 John chapter 5, I’m going to start at verse one. I love these scriptures.

All right. Verse one. 1 John 5:1. “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. And everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him, who is born of Him. In this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep His commandments.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome. For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world.” Have you been born of God? Are you born again? Do you know Jesus? Praise be to God that you are a world overcomer.

You have the power, the authority. You’ve got the risen Christ, the power of Holy Spirit on the inside of you that enables you to overcome the world. And you take part in what the Lord has accomplished for you. And you inherit righteousness because of your faith. Praise be to God. Thank you, Lord.

“For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world: our faith.” Woo! Our faith overcomes the world. Our faith. The faith that you have today overcomes the world and every circumstance that the world throws against it.

Now, I’m telling you folks, as you know, we have all been through quite a lot of testing. Amen. We’ve all been through a lot of testing. It’s been really extremely difficult. We’re going through circumstances that we don’t understand.

You know, we ask the Lord, “Lord, what’s happening? What’s going on here?” And sometimes we don’t hear anything, right? And I very strongly sense then when we don’t hear something from the Lord, we must hope and exercise our faith and just trust him.

Trust him. Trust his love for you. Trust his divine grace for you. Trust what his word says and speak that word out of your mouth. Speak it out and watch exactly what the Lord will do.

How do we exercise our faith? How do we do it? Here’s the answer: by speaking the word of God. When a circumstance rises up against you, speak the word of God. When sickness comes, speak the word of God. When pain comes, speak the word of God. He himself carried my pains on that cross. Praise be to God.

Scriptures on speaking faith-filled words emphasize that words are powerful tools that shape reality with the ability to bring life or death, create, and overcome obstacles. Key verses such as Mark 11:23—we’re going to look at that in a little bit—highlight that believing in the heart and speaking with conviction can cause mountains to move.

This encourages believers to align their words with God’s promises rather than agreeing with current circumstances. Wow, it’s powerful. That is absolutely powerful. All right, let’s look at Proverbs 18 verse 21. I’m reading this one out of the King James Version.

“Death and life are in the power or the authority of the tongue. They that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” This highlights that our words create our reality. Think about it. What you speak is what you get. Very true. We need to call forth those things that be not as though they were just like Abraham did. Praise be to God.

All right. Proverbs 6:2 out of the New King James Version. “You are snared by the words of your mouth. You’re taken by the words of your mouth.” Wow. Now, let’s think about this for a minute. You’re snared by the words of your mouth. Being snared is being caught in a trap.

We don’t want to be caught in a trap, do we? You were taken by the words of your mouth, captivated by them. You’re led by what you speak. Our words can curse our circumstances and bring harm to our lives. We must discipline our mouth with what we speak.

Don’t be a careless speaker of negative thoughts that will bring a snare on our own lives and rob us of God’s victory. Think about that. I tell you what guys, this is a discipline to learn for all of us. It is not easy. It takes years of training to learn how to train your tongue.

It is not easy. I’m being honest with you. I’m telling you the truth. But what you say is what you get. The scripture tells us that. All right, let’s look at James chapter 3. James chapter 3 verses 4 and 5. I’m going to read out of the New Living Translation.

This time I’m using different translations because the Lord just told me to do that. So that way it gives you a different highlight of what you might be reading right now. James 3:4 and 5 describes the tongue as a small rudder that directs a large ship, emphasizing its influence over our lives.

Speaking words will steer our lives into a better and a more glorious day. In fact, let me bring that up and read the scripture to you out of the NLT. Thank you, Lord. Should have had that up already. James chapter 3. Sorry guys.

All right. Verses four and five. “And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong.” Think about that. So, the circumstances—the winds might be really, really strong, but that little rudder under the ship makes it go despite what the wind is doing.

That’s amazing. That’s absolutely amazing when you think about that. “In the same way, the tongue is a small thing but makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire.

It is a whole world of wickedness corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.” Man, I’m telling you guys, when you read these words, man, this just hits me right here because I know that the word of God is truth.

Lord, give us your divine ability and the discipline to speak faith-filled words to change our circumstances, to even speak words over others that will change them according to the word of God. Not just what you desire, but what the word of God says. Pray that over your family members, over your friends, relatives, coworkers that you work with.

Telling you folks, it’s incredible and it’s powerful. All right, let’s go to Mark 11:23. Actually, I’m going to start with Mark 11:20, but I’m going to read out of the New King James. These scriptures encourage speaking directly to obstacles with unwavering faith, promising that one will have what they say.

Again, now in verse 20, Mark 11:20: “Now in the morning as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter, remembering, said to him, ‘Rabbi, look! The fig tree which you cursed has withered away.’ So Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Have faith in God.

For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, “Be removed and be cast into the sea,” and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things which he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.’

Wow. So powerful. We have the ability to move mountains with our faith. Faith-filled words will change circumstances. Now let God just put that in your heart and begin to speak differently and watch the changes that’ll come.

And again, I’m still believing the Lord for healing in my body. I deal with a lot of stuff physically and others in our church do as well. But I’m telling you, the word of God is our hope. The word of God is our hope.

You know, I was in to see my wound care doctor on Tuesday, and I’m telling you, it was truly amazing because he was planning to do a surgical procedure on my wound and clean it out with a scalpel, a curette. It’s called a curette, but it’s like a scalpel. And it’s really a bloody mess. It really is. It’s gross and it hurts a lot.

But anyway, they cleaned up my leg—the nurses did and all that. And the doctor comes in, he lifts up my leg because the wound’s on the back of my leg. And this is the thing, you know, there were times when I had multiple wounds all over my leg.

The rest of my leg looks pretty good, but that one wound on the back of the leg has taken a long, long time to heal and it is healing and it’s getting smaller. Well, when he lifted up my leg and looked under, he went, “Wow. Wow. Wow.” And he puts my leg back down.

He says, “Well, I’m super excited because I was planning to clean this wound up today, but I don’t have to do it now.” And I was like, “Thank you, Jesus.” And that’s exactly what I said, you know. And he says, “Well, once again, you’ve proved me wrong because this is healing.”

And he says, “I really believe it’s going to close up all the way.” And he has told me before that this particular wound will never heal because of dealing with diabetes and all these other issues that go into that. You know, what makes them believe that? But we would constantly say, “We believe the Lord. We believe the Lord.”

You know, come out of the office and just, you know, underneath my breath just say, “Lord, I renounce those words… this, that, and the other.” And you know, my wife and I would continue to believe the Lord. So, very, very grateful for that. Extremely, extremely grateful. What a powerful, powerful testimony.

All right, let’s go to 2 Corinthians chapter 4. Going to read verses 13 through 15. “And since we have the same spirit of faith according to what was written, ‘I believed and therefore I spoke,’ we also believe and therefore speak.

Hallelujah. I love this, man. I love this. Knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus and will present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.”

We speak what we believe. Amen. Same goes with doubt. If you believe that your world’s going to fall apart, that’s what you’re going to speak all the time. Amazing. All right, let’s go back to the book of Job, chapter 22. And I’m going to read one verse here, verse 28.

“You will also decree a thing”—a thing is something that’s real, tangible, you know, it covers a lot of different areas—”and it will be established to you; so light will shine on your ways.” God’s word is a light. God spoke, “Light be,” and it was so.

So, Job 22:28 states that declaring or decreeing a thing brings it to pass with divine light shining on your path. So, how do you decree something? You’ve got to speak it, right? You’ve got to say it out of your mouth.

Guys, this is not just some, you know, crazy concocted faith thing that the Word of Faith people came up with. This is God’s word. It is God’s word. There are multiple scriptures I’m giving you that say the power of what we speak changes our circumstances.

All right. Proverbs chapter 15 verse 4. I’m reading out of the NIV, the New International Version. “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.” Oh, that’s powerful.

The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. We must speak words of comfort. It will in time bring forth a strong tree of life. Its fruit will be delicious and eternal. It’s amazing. We create circumstances by the words that we speak.

Heart-to-mouth connection. Words of faith come from an abundance of the heart. Meaning that you meditate…
