Rep. Swalwell Now Officially Under Investigation By Manhattan DA: Reports

Although he’s been dogged by sordid allegations for years, this week has brought about a rapid fall for U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA).

Once seen as a future Democratic Party leader, a string of allegations of sexual misconduct have caused even some of Swalwell’s one-time allies to back away from him.

Now, he’s on the radar of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, per Breitbart:

In a statement to CNN, the Manhattan DA’s Office called for “survivors and anyone with knowledge of these allegations” to come forward and contact the office’s Special Victims Division.

“We urge survivors and anyone with knowledge of these allegations to contact our Special Victims Division at 212-335-9373,” the office said. “Our specially trained prosecutors, investigators and counselors are well-equipped to help you in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered manner.”

The statement from the Manhattan DA’s office comes after a former staffer for Swalwell told the San Francisco Chronicle that the California representative, who is running to be the next governor of California, allegedly sexually assaulted her in two separate instances.

News of the latest allegations have sparked constant speculation and conversation on social media:

An array of party officials have called on Swalwell to suspend his gubernatorial bid in light of the allegations, as Politico reported:

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi headlined a growing list of Democratic lawmakers called on Rep. Eric Swalwell Friday to withdraw his campaign for California governor amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

“This extremely sensitive matter must be appropriately investigated with full transparency and accountability,” Pelosi said in a statement. “As I discussed with Congressman Swalwell, it is clear that is best done outside of a gubernatorial campaign.”

In a joint statement with other elected House Democratic leaders, Jeffries called for a “swift investigation” as well as the end of his pending campaign.

“This is unacceptable of anyone — certainly not an elected official — and must be taken seriously,” the leaders said.
