DEVELOPING: Aircraft Emergency Prompts Ground Stop At JFK

An emergency on an incoming flight forced a ground stop at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

“The FAA says Frontier Airlines Flight 3546 landed safely at JFK around 12:45 p.m. after the crew reported an engine problem,” NBC New York stated.

The ground stop was issued from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.

NBC New York shared more:

Officials say the Airbus A320 had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico.

No other details were immediately available.

All inbound flights were being held at their origin until 1:45 p.m. Meanwhile, low clouds had inbound flights delayed by about three-and-a-half hours — and departures were delayed about an hour for weather, too.

The FAA says its investigation is ongoing.

The ground stop at JFK follows the FAA halting flights at Newark Liberty International Airport Wednesday afternoon due to “staffing issues.”

Flights were halted at the major East Coast hub for 75 minutes.

Daily Mail shared:

No aircraft were allowed to take off from the airport until the ground stop cleared, causing a major backup for travelers.

Officials with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey revealed that the emergency took place on board Frontier Airlines Flight 3546 arriving from San Juan.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 noted that Flight 3546 signaled a code 7700, which is a general emergency call used when there's a medical problem on board, a mechanical trouble, or something urgent that needs priority help.

Frontier Airlines has told the Daily Mail that the plane's captain declared an emergency as a precautionary measure after experiencing a mechanical issue on the approach into JFK.

The Port Authority added the plane landed safely at 12.50pm and there were no injuries reported on board.

A Frontier spokesperson noted that Flight 3546 is now undergoing an evaluation to see what went wrong during the flight.
