OOPS: CNN’s Angry Jake Tapper Caught On Hot Mic

CNN host Jake Tapper accidentally found himself in an embarrassing on-air slip during the network’s August 15th coverage of President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Normally, Tapper anchors The Lead from Washington, D.C. in its regular 5–7 p.m. EST slot. But on Friday, he was broadcasting live from Alaska when Anderson Cooper attempted to shift the broadcast back over to him. Unaware his microphone was hot, Tapper blurted, “I’m fine, just give me my show back,” a comment that suggested irritation with the handoff. Curtis Houck, managing editor at conservative site NewsBusters, quickly clipped and posted the exchange on X. Cooper, smiling through the awkward moment, playfully replied, “Show’s back!”

So cringe.

Right after the exchange, Tapper tried to begin an interview with California Democrat Adam Schiff. But Schiff couldn’t hear him, responding, “I think I lost you.” Tapper then addressed the audience, saying, “we’re having real comms problems today. I’m sorry about that. If anybody can hear me, let’s go throw it back to New York.” Once again, Cooper stepped in to steady the broadcast, closing with “Okay, Jake, thanks very much.” USA TODAY later contacted CNN, Cooper, and Tapper for comment on the incident.

The backdrop for all this was Trump’s summit with Putin in Alaska. The highly anticipated meeting ended without any concrete peace deal regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Tapper has occasionally shown flashes of frustration during live programming. One notable example came in 2020 on State of the Union when he pressed Lara Trump over remarks she had made about then-candidate Joe Biden at a “Women for Trump” rally. She had said of Biden, “Every time he comes on stage and they turn to him, I’m like: ‘Joe, can you get it out. Let’s get the words out.'” Tapper followed up by asking, “How do you think it makes little kids with stutters feel when they see you make a comment like that?” Lara Trump claimed she hadn’t realized Biden struggled with a stutter and doubled down by asserting, “I think what we see on stage with Joe Biden, Jake, is very clearly a cognitive decline. That’s what I’m referring to.” Tapper cut the interview short, telling her she had “absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody’s cognitive decline.” He later disclosed that he apologized to her for the way the exchange ended.

In May, Tapper and Axios reporter Alex Thompson published Original Sin, a book that examined Biden’s presidency and pointed to issues of both physical and mental decline. The book stirred up significant pushback, particularly among liberals and centrists who viewed it as unfair or politically motivated. Earlier this year, Tapper was also spotted attending the Broadway premiere of Good Night, And Good Luck in New York on April 3, 2025.
