Here’s all we know so far:

  • Victim: Danville, Virginia City Council member Lee Vogler, age 38.

  • What happened: At around 11:30 a.m. on July 30, 2025, a man forcibly entered Vogler’s office at Showcase Magazine, poured gasoline on him, then chased him outside and set him on fire.

  • Suspect: Identified as 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, a local resident. He fled the scene but was arrested a few blocks away.

  • Motive: Police say the attacker and Vogler knew each other, and the incident stemmed from a personal dispute, not Vogler’s political role or public service.

  • Medical response: Vogler was treated at the scene and then airlifted to a burn center in Lynchburg (or Chapel Hill/UNC burn unit, depending on reports). He remained conscious and able to identify his attacker.

  • Political role: Vogler has served on Danville City Council since 2012 (elected at age 24) and is now serving his fourth term. He also has a senior role at the media/marketing firm Andrew Brooks Media Group and has served on Virginia’s Small Business Commission.

  • Community response: Leaders across party lines swiftly condemned the violence, and colleagues expressed shock and support for Vogler.

  • Legal status: Hayes remains in custody, with charges pending as the investigation continues.

  • Injury status: The full extent of Vogler’s injuries hasn’t been disclosed publicly, but he was alert during medical transport.

There is no truth to the rumor that CNN immediately identified the attacker as “mostly white”.

And from the NY Post:

A maniac set a city councilman on fire after breaking into his workplace in a sickening attack in Virginia on Wednesday.

Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, allegedly barged into Showcase Magazine, a local monthly publication, and dumped a five-gallon bucket of gasoline on Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler around 11:30 a.m., according to the Danville Police Department and the outlet’s publisher.

Vogler, 38, managed to escape the office and ran to the front of the building, but the monster followed him and set him on fire.

First responders rendered aid to the pol, who identified his suspected attacker at the harrowing scene, before he was airlifted to a hospital in North Carolina.

“Lee is awake and talking, and is en route to the burns center in Lynchburg,” Showcase Magazine publisher Andrew Brooks said through tears in a video published on Facebook on Wednesday afternoon.

“Our hearts and prayers are with him,” he went on. “We don’t really know what to say.”
