Democrat U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver has been indicted on Federal charges.
The lawmaker from New Jersey has been indicted on charges alleging she assaulted immigration officers outside of a detention center in New Jersey
Fox News had the full scoop:
Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) was hit with a federal indictment for allegedly obstructing Homeland Security agents during the May 9 incident outside a Newark immigration detention facility in a move her attorneys call political payback.
U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced the three-count indictment, charging McIver with forcibly impeding federal officers during the attempted arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka at the Delaney Hall immigration facility.
According to a DOJ press release, McIver and two other members of Congress were conducting a congressional oversight visit that coincided with an immigration protest. After Baraka entered the facility’s secured area, federal agents warned him to leave.
When officers tried to arrest him, McIver allegedly blocked them, putting her arms around the mayor, and “slammed her forearm” into one officer while grabbing another.
Each of the first two counts carries a maximum eight-year prison sentence. The third carries up to one year.

Today a federal grand jury seated in Newark, New Jersey returned a three-count indictment charging U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver with forcibly impeding and interfering with federal law enforcement officers. This indictment has a maximum penalty of 8 years for Count One, an additional maximum penalty of 8 years for Count Two, and a maximum penalty of 1 year in prison for Count Three.
As I have stated in the past, it is my Constitutional obligation as the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer for New Jersey to ensure that our federal partners are protected when executing their duties. While people are free to express their views for or against particular policies, they must not do so in a manner that endangers law enforcement and the communities those officers serve.

The mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Ras Baraka, who was seen with McIver outside the detention center, was previously charged with trespassing, but those charges have since been dropped.
Per CBS:
Baraka’s arrest happened on May 9 outside Delaney Hall, an ICE facility housing migrants in Newark, during a visit with members of New Jersey’s congressional delegation.
ADVERTISEMENT“After extensive consideration, we have agreed to dismiss Mayor Baraka’s misdemeanor charge of trespass for the sake of moving forward,” Habba said in a statement posted to social media Monday.
“I am glad that the U.S. Attorney has agreed that this case should be dismissed. I have had strong relationships with prior U.S. Attorneys, and I plan to speak with the current U.S. Attorney about issues on which we can cooperate. As to Delaney Hall, I will continue to advocate for the humane treatment of detainees, and I will continue to press the facility to ensure that it is compliant with City of Newark codes and regulations,” Baraka said in a statement.
Baraka, a Democrat currently running for governor of New Jersey, has criticized the ICE facility housing migrants in his city. He and others have argued it is dangerous and illegal, and that the private company that signed a contract with ICE blocked inspections and did not obtain permits. The Department of Homeland Security denies those claims.
