Senate PASSES Measure to CANCEL Trump’s Tariffs on Canada — Here Are the Four Republicans Who Voted ‘Yes’

The Senate has just passed a measure aimed at cancelling President Trump’s tariffs on Canada.

The final vote was 51-48, largely along party lines. However, four Republicans broke ranks to side with Democrats against President Trump.

Those Republicans were:

• Lisa Murkowski
• Mitch McConnell
• Susan Collins
• Rand Paul

Sen. Rand Paul was a co-sponsor on the resolution, which was introduced by Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine.

The Senate just voted 51-48 to repeal President Trump's tariff on Canada, but it means absolutely nothing because the House won't take it up.

Senators Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul joined the Democrats to make it pass.

Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Rand Paul, also of Kentucky, will hopefully get on the Republican bandwagon, for a change, and fight the Democrats wild and flagrant push to not penalize Canada for the sale, into our Country, of large amounts of Fentanyl, by Tariffing the value of this horrible and deadly drug in order to make it more costly to distribute and buy. Now, despite the support in the Senate, it is highly unlikely that this measure actually gets passed in the House of Representatives.

Mike Johnson has already vowed to halt it in its tracks.

And, even if it did get through Congress somehow, President Trump could still veto the measure.

Still, this resolution sends a message.

It definitely shows where certain Senators’ loyalties lie…

A Democrat-led resolution undoing President Donald Trump’s tariffs against Canada advanced past the Senate on Wednesday after multiple Republicans joined their counterparts in support of it.

Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul of Kentucky supported the resolution, bucking the president to do so. The final vote was 51 to 48.

“As I have always warned, tariffs are bad policy, and trade wars with our partners hurt working people most. Tariffs drive up the cost of goods and services,” former GOP Senate leader McConnell said in a statement afterward.

Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso slammed the resolution’s passage, saying in a statement, “Senator Kaine’s goal was not to make law. It was simply an effort to undermine President Trump’s successful work to secure the Northern Border.”

“Speaker Johnson already declared Senator Kaine’s resolution dead on arrival in the House of Representatives. It will never make it to President Trump’s desk,” he explained. “This meaningless messaging resolution will not stop Senate Republicans from making America’s communities safer.”

The privileged resolution was introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., and would end the emergency Trump declared at the northern border on Feb. 1.

In a statement of administrative policy ahead of the vote, Trump’s White House said his advisors would urge the president to veto the resolution if it passed the Senate.

The Senate passed a resolution Wednesday night that would thwart President Donald Trump’s ability to impose tariffs on Canada, delivering a rare rebuke to the president just hours after he unveiled sweeping plans to clamp down on international trade.

The Senate resolution, passed by a 51-48 vote tally with four Republicans and all Democrats in support, would end Trump’s emergency declaration on fentanyl trafficking that underpins tariffs on Canada. Trump earlier Wednesday announced orders — his so-called “Liberation Day” — to impose import taxes on a slew of international trading partners, though Canadian imports for now were spared from new taxes.

The Senate’s legislation has practically no chance of passing the Republican-controlled House and being signed by Trump, but it showed the limits of Republican support for Trump’s vision of remaking the U.S. economy by restricting free trade. Many economists are warning that the plan could cause an economic contraction, and GOP senators are already watching with unease as Trump upends the United States’ relationship with the rest of the world.

Trump earlier Wednesday singled out the four Republicans — Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Rand Paul of Kentucky — who voted in favor of the resolution.

In a statement following the vote, McConnell, the former Senate Republican leader, said, “As I have always warned, tariffs are bad policy, and trade wars with our partners hurt working people most.”
