Knife Control? Country’s Prime Minister Announces Ban On “Ninja Swords”

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the country will outlaw ninja swords by summer to deter “knife crime.”

“Knife crime is at epidemic levels and is ruining lives across Britain. As Prime Minister, I’ll crack down on sales of these lethal weapons once and for all. When I announce a ban, you’ll get a ban,” Starmer said last year.

“Confirmed: Ninja swords will be banned by this summer. When we promise action we take it,” he said Thursday.

Per Daily Express:

The mother of a schoolboy stabbed to death by a thug armed with a weapon “of war” has welcomed a ban on ninja swords.

Ronan Kanda, 16, was killed with a 20-inch blade just yards from his own in Wolverhampton in a case of mistaken identity.

The Home Office on Thursday confirmed ninja swords will be outlawed, with anyone caught with one of the weapons facing six months in prison.

Officials have also drawn up plans to increase the maximum penalty to two years behind bars.

Ronan’s mother, Pooja Kanda, said: “Today marks a very important day for us as a family and our campaign.

“Since losing our beautiful boy Ronan, we have relentlessly campaigned for a ban on ninja swords – the lethal weapon which took his life.

“We believe ninja swords have no place in our society other than to seriously harm and kill.

“Each step towards tackling knife crime is a step towards getting justice for our boy Ronan.”

The move to ban the blades will be laid before Parliament on Thursday and will come into force in the summer once it has gained approval in Parliament.

The Telegraph reports:

Ninja sword owners are to be paid the face value of their weapons to hand them over to police before they are officially banned, the Home Office has announced.

Anyone who bought a ninja sword before Friday will be able to claim the market value for their ninja swords under an “ambitious” weapons surrender scheme that will run from July 1 to 31.

The move came as Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, announced that the ban on the swords will come into force on Aug 1, making it illegal to possess, manufacture, import or sell them.

Anyone caught in possession of a ninja sword in private after that date will face six months in prison, rising to two years under new measures in the Crime and Policing Bill currently before Parliament. It is already an offence to carry a weapon in public, punishable by up to four years in jail.

The crackdown is the final part of “Ronan’s law”, a package of anti-knife measures named in memory of Ronan Kanda, 16, who was attacked and killed by two teenagers in a case of mistaken identity close to his home in Wolverhampton in June 2022. His killers had bought a set of swords and a machete on the internet.
