My Olive Branch To The Catholics

Ok folks, time to try and make things right!

Allow me to set the stage for a moment and explain how we even got here….and where we’re going, ok?

A few weeks ago, I got the Catholics very mad at me by saying they shouldn’t pray to Mary.

I thought that was kind of a basic statement, as in we pray to God only just like Jesus taught in the LORD’s Prayer.

But it set off a firestorm of 1000+ comments and emails from Catholics who were all too unhappy with me.

Actually, the thing that started it all in the first place including my comment that Catholics shouldn’t pray to Mary was watching this video go viral online of this Priest explaining that of course we have to pray to Mary because sometimes Jesus just gets busy!

It’s such a bad take, I almost don’t even know where to begin…

Is this what they are teaching now in Seminaries?

The irony is, it reminds me exactly of Elijah taunting the prophets of Ba’al in 1 Kings 18.  Remember this?

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”

The sad irony though is that this was Elijah taunting the other prophets for their inept “god”.

How far we’ve fallen since then….

Now we have a Catholic Priest who must not have ever read this chapter of the Bible trying to promote what Elijah used as mockery as doctrine to support praying to Mary.

So sad!

So I thought that video was rather ridiculous and so I said so and I said whatever the reasoning behind it, Catholics should really stop praying to Mary.

And that set off a firestorm of comments and emails in reply.

So I then posted a poll on Twitter/X to find out what all of you thought, and after letting the poll run for 24 hours I came back to find that my good friend Bo Polny of all people had responded and Bo was in the “Yes” camp!

A few days later, Bo and I did a livestream show and I asked him about it live on the air, and to be fair to Bo I kind of caught him off guard (even though I thought he answered very eloquently).

But after that show last week, Bo said “hey, why don’t we just do a dedicated show on this one topic, and I’ll be more prepared for it and ready to go.”

So I thought that was a fantastic idea!

I have always believed that the answer to speech you don’t like is not less speech, it’s more speech.

That’s what our Founding Fathers believed.

You don’t silence people you disagree with, you have conversations with them.  You have debates.  You have a free and open exchange of ideas and hopefully everyone walks away strengthened and the best ideas eventually win out.

That’s how our country was set up and that’s what I intend to do on this topic.

So I told Bo that was a brilliant idea and we did that dedicated live show today on this one topic: “Is it ok to pray to Mary?”

So that’s my olive branch to the Catholic community….I am holding firm to my position, but I brought Bo on to my show to present the reasoning behind why Catholics believe it is right and permissible to pray to Mary.  I don’t agree with it, but we can disagree and still be friends and still have a great conversation debating some of the points.

And that’s exactly what we did.

Bo was brilliant as always, perfectly presenting why Catholics believe what they do.

I don’t agree with it, but like always I had such a blast chatting with Bo about it and getting the ideas out there.

It’s unlike anything we’ve ever done before.

Big thanks to Bo for coming on and doing something that’s definitely outside his normal box, but he did a fantastic job and I had a lot of fun.

I stand firm in my simple belief that we should not be praying to a created being, we should only pray to the Creator, but we can disagree on things and still be friends.

So Catholics….here you go!  I stand unwavering in my opinion, but here’s my olive branch to you…
