New Orleans Assistant District Attorney Found Deceased In Apparent Suicide

An Orleans Parish prosecutor was discovered dead in his office by an apparent suicide, police said.

Ian Kersting, the assistant attorney general of New Orleans Parish, was found with “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds” in his office.

New Orleans police said EMS arrived and pronounced Kersting dead at the scene.

“The Orleans Parish DA’s Office family suffered a terrible tragedy Saturday night,” the office said in a statement, according to WVUE.

“Assistant District Attorney Ian Kersting was a beloved member of our office, and we send our love and deepest condolences to his family,” the statement added.

In a subsequent statement, a spokesman said the DA’s office would be closed Monday (Jan. 6), so “the entire OPDA team will be addressed by grief and trauma counselors in the wake of an unexpected tragedy.”

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the judges of Criminal District Court and Juvenile Court, as well as the Orleans Public Defenders, for their extraordinary compassion and humanity during this challenging time, as there will be members of our staff who will require time to cope and heal,” the statement added.

The statement said the DA’s office would resume normal operations on Tuesday.

Records show Kersting was admitted to the Louisiana bar on Oct. 30, 2020.

Kersting had been assigned to the office’s SAKI unit (Sexual Assault Kit Initiative), a specialized division that works in partnership with NOPD sex crimes detectives to investigate and prosecute sex crimes cases through the use of recovered DNA evidence.

Fox News reports:

Kersting’s death happened just days after a terrorist attack rocked the city in the early hours of New Year’s Day, leaving 14 victims dead and dozens injured.

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an Army veteran from Houston, plowed a rented Ford pickup through a crowd of Bourbon Street revelers in the attack that officials say was inspired by the Islamic State.

The FBI recovered a black ISIS flag from the rented truck and found that Jabbar pledged allegiance to ISIS in online videos posted hours before the attack.
