Here’s what The Guardian Reported:
Promising to speak the truth about American history, Kamala Harris told the National Congress of American Indians the Biden administration would not shy from a history since the first arrival of European explorers that she said was “shameful”.
Hundreds of Native Americans and other environmental activists rallied against fossil fuels on Indigenous Peoples Day in Washington.
The US vice-president also highlighted an “epidemic” of murders of Native American women and girls, which she said “must end”.
ADVERTISEMENTHarris delivered a virtual address the day after a federal holiday originally named for Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who arrived in the Americas in 1492.
The naming of the holiday for Columbus, a slave-holder and trader who brought disease as well as oppression to the Americas, has proven increasingly controversial, criticized on the left and defended on the right and among some Italian heritage groups.
The White House this year issued twin proclamations, greeting both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day.
“It is an honor,” Harris said on Tuesday, “to be with you this week, as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. As we speak truth about our nation’s history.
“Since 1934, every October, the United States has recognized the voyage of the European explorers who first landed on the shores of the Americas. But that is not the whole story. That has never been the whole story.
“Those explorers ushered in a wave of devastation for tribal nations, perpetrating violence, stealing land and spreading disease. We must not shy away from this shameful past. We must shed light on it and do everything we can to address the impact of the past on Native communities today.”
Harris, during her 2020 presidential campaign, vowed to eliminate Columbus Day and make it Indigenous People’s Day.

Per Buzz Feed:
Sen. Kamala Harris told a crowd here Monday that she would push for the federal government to rename Columbus Day “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” a focal point for some progressives who say the holiday should emphasize the history of Native Americans instead of the European conqueror.
“Sign me up,” Harris said in response to a voter’s question of whether she would support the initiative to rename the holiday. She spoke of her own efforts in the Senate to make lynching a federal crime.
Harris, who officially launched her campaign for president last month in Oakland, drew an overflow crowd on her first town hall in New Hampshire, the site of the country’s first presidential primary. They spilled out of a church and into the snowy streets of Portsmouth to hear her deliver a campaign message of “speaking truth” and “fighting for justice,” a refrain that focuses in part on her past as a prosecutor and law enforcement official.
