New York City Mayor Eric Adams Indicted On Federal Criminal Charges

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted by a grand jury on charges related to a federal investigation.

The indictment against Adams, expected to be unsealed on Thursday, is the first for a sitting NYC mayor.

Sources indicated Adams will surrender to authorities early next week.

The historic indictment follows numerous members of Adams’ inner circle submitting their resignations, including former NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban.

From the New York Post:

Details about the exact accusations remained unclear, but they are believed to be connected to allegations of the Turkish government illegally funneling money into his mayoral campaign in exchange for approval of the Turkish Consulate in Manhattan, according to sources.

Sources said the mayor is facing a charge of acting as an unregistered foreign agent after accepting donations from foreign entities.

“It is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with federal crimes. If so, these charges will be entirely false, based on lies,” Adams said.

“I always knew that if I stood my ground for all of you, that I would be a target — and a target I became,” he continued.

“I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and my spirit,” he added.

The Associated Press noted:

It marks a stunning turn for Adams, a former police captain who won election nearly three years ago to become the city’s second Black mayor on a campaign that stressed his working class roots and commitment to public safety. But as Adams has made reducing crime a cornerstone of his administration, he has faced growing legal peril, with multiple federal investigations honing in on his top aides and his own campaign.

In the last two weeks alone, the leaders he appointed to oversee the country’s largest police force and largest schools system have announced their resignations.

Adams is the first mayor in New York City history to be indicted while in office. If he were to resign, he would be replaced by the city’s public advocate, Jumaane Williams, who would then schedule a special election.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has the power to remove Adams from office. Hochul spokesperson, Avi Small, issued a statement late Wednesday that said “Governor Hochul is aware of these concerning news reports and is monitoring the situation. It would be premature to comment further until the matter is confirmed by law enforcement.”

“Federal agents can be seen parked outside the mayor’s home at Gracie Mansion, and the specific charges of the indictment are expected to be unsealed later Thursday,” CBS News reports.

Per CBS News:

Adams’ lawyer said in a statement the feds are there “in an effort to create a spectacle” and to “pick up a phone.”

“Federal agents appeared this morning at Gracie Mansion in an effort to create a spectacle (again) and take Mayor Adams phone (again). He has not been arrested and looks forward to his day in court,” Alex Spiro wrote. “They send a dozen agents to pick up a phone when we would have happily turned it in.”

At this point, it’s unclear what charges Adams will face. However, it will make him the first sitting mayor in New York City history to be indicted.

The move comes on the heels of several investigations involving the mayor and members of his administration.
