Donald Trump’s attorneys sought to declare a mistrial in the sideshow of a criminal trial currently underway in Manhattan.
Judge Juan Merchan, however, dismissed the motion in a ruling on Thursday, as Fox News reported:
Trump defense attorney Todd Blanche first requested a mistrial on Tuesday after Daniels’ first day on the stand but was denied. Merchan did, however, admit she was a difficult witness to control and said much of her testimony was “unnecessary” and “irrelevant” to the charges.
Trump attorneys on Thursday again requested a mistrial.
Blanche said that the prosecution asked Daniels “a whole host of questions” that never should have been asked, pointing to questions about the porn actress’s childhood and her alleged interaction with Trump. Blanche argued they were “things that are irrelevant to the facts of this case.”
Blanche reminded that the case is not about sex, and again stressed that Daniels’ testimony was “extraordinarily prejudicial for the jury to hear.”
Blanche continued that many of the questions asked by the prosecution were “prejudicial.”
“It is so dangerous, so prejudicial, it borders on a problem from the beginning,” Blanche said, adding that Daniels’ testimony and story about the alleged sexual encounter kept changing.
The ruling attracted significant backlash, including from Trump himself:
TRUMP: "This judge is corrupt. His ruling was a disgrace. He's totally conflicted and I've got to get back on the campaign trail. I'm not supposed to be here. I'm innocent and being held in this room with a corrupt judge." pic.twitter.com/wZ8MTr67lQ

Others chimed in with their opinions on the case and to express disapproval of Merchan’s decision:
JUST IN: Judge Juan Merchan just exposed how corrupt and biased he is by refusing to rule a mistrial! According to the Judge he doesn’t believe Stormy Daniels story changed, even though Trump’s attorneys proved inconsistencies in her story.

President Trump's attorneys have filed a motion for mistrial after Stormy Daniels’ testimony.
Shira Scheindlin, a former U.S. District Court Judge, was on CNN and said no relevant evidence was produced, and said that her testimony showed she had a personal motive to “get Trump.” pic.twitter.com/yPik9O3FoQ

This is extremely prejudicial testimony, this is not a case about sex. We deny…

Here’s how the New York Post covered Trump’s response to the development:
Donald Trump ripped Judge Juan Merchan as “corrupt” while ripping his ruling to deny a mistrial in his ‘hush money’ case as a “disgrace” in fiery comments as he left court on Thursday.
“This judge is corrupt, he’s a corrupt judge,” Trump said. “This judge, what he did, and what his ruling was is a disgrace.”
Judge Merchan ruled just moments prior that the former president’s attorneys opened the door to “corroborate” Stormy Daniels’ account of the tryst after they called her a liar in their opening statement and at other points in the trial.
Trump sat through extensive testimony by Daniels on Thursday that included her claiming that he did not wear a condom during their sexual encounter and her spanking him – which led to his attorneys requesting a mistrial.
“I have to get back on the campaign trail, I’m not supposed to be here,” Trump said. “We are so innocent, there’s never been anything like this.”
Fox News provided some analysis earlier in the week regarding the Trump team’s initial motion for a mistrial:
