[WATCH] Attorney General Merrick Garland Calls Voter ID Requirements And Restrictions On Drop Boxes ‘Discriminatory And Burdensome’

Attorney General Merrick Garland said Sunday that election integrity efforts, such as voter ID requirements and restrictions on ballot drop boxes, were ‘discriminatory and burdensome.’

Garland made the comments alongside Kamala Harris in Selma, Alabama, remembering the 59th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday attacks on civil rights marchers in the historic city.

“The right to vote is still under attack,” Garland commented.

“That is why the Justice Department is fighting back. That is why one of the first things I did when I came into office was to double the size of the voting section of the civil rights division. That is why we are challenging efforts by states and jurisdictions to implement discriminatory, burdensome, and unnecessary restrictions on access to the ballot, including those related to mail-in voting, the use of drop boxes, and voter ID requirements,” he continued.

He lamented that in recent years, certain measures such as voter ID laws and redistricting maps have made it harder “for millions of eligible voters to vote and to elect the representatives of their choice.”

“Those measures include practices and procedures that make voting more difficult; redistricting maps that disadvantage minorities; and changes in voting administration that diminish the authority of locally elected or nonpartisan election administrators,” Garland told worshippers at Selma’s Tabernacle Baptist Church, the site of one of the first mass meetings of the voting rights movement. “Such measures threaten the foundation of our system of government.”

Garland faced severe criticism for his remarks, with critics saying his sentiment is to provide cover for widespread election fraud.

“Democrats want to make it easy to cheat so they can steal the election. It’s that simple,” The Federalist CEO Sean Davis said.

“Voter ID just so happens to be one of the only things keeping illegal immigrants from voting… So, of course, the Biden admin wants to get rid of it,” Tim Young said.

“The United States is already the only industrialized country in the world not to have a standard requirement of Voter ID. Now the Biden DOJ wants to remove it entirely and expand drop boxes,” True the Vote, a conservative vote-monitoring organization, stated.

“When they say the quiet part out loud, believe them. There is a reason we have voter ID in this country and there is a reason why it is overwhelmingly supported by BOTH SIDES of the aisle,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said.

“How about keeping people off the ballot to help Joe Biden – does that count as ‘discriminatory’ behavior to limit voting? Also – Black people know how to get ID. Surprised Merrick? Black people are not unintelligent like you think they are?” Bo Snerdley commented.
