You can’t make this type of stuff up.
According to reports, a senior-level Ukrainian military aide was killed on Monday after receiving a birthday present of what was supposed to be mock grenades. It turns out there was nothing fake about the gift he received.
Major Gennadiy Chastyakov acted as an aide to Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief of the military.
Chastyakov’s 13-year-old son was reportedly playing with the grenades his father received as a present when his father attempted to take them out of his hands, the pin was pulled and the grenade detonated.
The detonation killed Chastyakov and left his son seriously injured.
Currently, the incident is being treated as an accident, though something just doesn’t add up about that. General Zaluzhny recently committed himself to highlighting the dire situation Ukraine finds itself in.
By all accounts, he doesn’t seem to think this war is winnable anymore. WLTR recently reported that officials within Zelensky’s own cabinet told Time Magazine that they believed the war was essentially lost and that Ukraine should enter into peace negotiations. Here’s what we currently know:

CNN provided more details:
Police found five more unexploded grenades in the apartment, Klymenko said.
According to Klymenko, police identified the “fellow serviceman” who gave the gift to Chastyakov, and found two similar grenades during a search of his office.
Police said criminal proceedings had been initiated and an investigation is ongoing, though the Ukrainian interior ministry later said it considers the death an “accident” based on preliminary information.
Noel Reports confirmed the news: “Zaluzhny’s assistent Gennadiy Chastyakov was killed by a grenade explosion at his home near Kyiv. The Commander-in-Chief himself confirmed the tragic news.
“From the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Gennadiy was a reliable shoulder for me, completely devoting his life to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the fight against Russian aggression.”

BBC News had this to say:
However, the official cause of the explosion has been questioned by Ukrainian commentators, some of whom have speculated whether it was an attack targeting Gen Zaluzhny himself, on the assumption that he might have attended his aide’s birthday celebrations.
Last week the commander in chief gave a blunt assessment of the situation on Ukraine’s front lines against Russia’s invasion forces.
