WARNING: Graphic – Police Investigating Death Of Hockey Player After ‘Freak Accident’

WARNING: This post will contain extremely graphic and bloody video footage of the moment hockey player Adam Johnson is killed in an ‘accident’ that took place during a hockey game.

Adam Johnson, a former player for the Pittsburgh Penguins, tragically died during one of his games.

The accident saw Matt Petgraves, a player on the opposite team, hitting Johnson in the neck with his ice skate.

The folks at Fox News share more on the story:

Ryan Wolf shared a tribute post from one of Johnson’s previous teams, the Augsburger Panther, to her Instagram Stories on Monday.

“My sweet angel,” she wrote in the post, “I’ll miss you forever and love you always.”

Johnson, 29, was playing in a Challenge Cup game between the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena on Saturday when another player from the opposing team appeared to collide with him.

The blade of the opposing player’s skate cut Johnson in the neck.

The incident has left many in the community upset and angry.

Many are calling for Petgraves to be criminally prosecuted for manslaughter.

As of now, the police are investigating the incident.

However, it is unclear whether this will result in any charges.

The Associated Press News shares more on the story:

Johnson played college hockey at Minnesota-Duluth, helping the Bulldogs reach two NCAA Tournaments. He scored an overtime game-winner in the 2017 tournament, sending Minnesota-Duluth to the Frozen Four by beating Boston University.

He also played for three American Hockey League clubs during his career and in Germany with the Augsburger Panther in 2022-23 before agreeing to join Nottingham for this season.

“Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today’s news,” the team added.

“The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night in the most testing of circumstances. Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him. The club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him.”

The video of the incident is disturbing and leaves me feeling sorrow for the loss of someone so young.

I anticipate that there will be some changes to the NHL rules following this incident.
