JUST IN: GOP Votes On New House Speaker

House Republicans held a behind closed door vote on Wednesday to nominate the House’s next new Speaker.

In a 113 to 99 vote, House Republicans voted to select Steve Scalise of Louisiana to be the next House Speaker.

Rep. Scalise was able to edge Jim Jordan of Ohio by a mere 14 votes.

House Democrats and Republicans are expected to hold  an open vote sometime later this week where Scalise will need to snag 217 votes.

Per ABC News:

House Republicans voted 113-99 to nominate Majority Leader Steve Scalise for Speaker of the House, defeating Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan.

The vote was conducted by secret ballot, with 113 members voting for Scalise, 99 for Jordan, eight for others and three voting present.

Shortly after the vote, Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Oklahoma, announced that he is running for House majority leader, gunning for the vacancy created by Scalise winning the nomination for speaker. Hern had flirted with running for speaker and is the chairman of the GOP’s largest conference, the Republican Study Committee.

Republicans will need 217 votes when they eventually vote for a speaker on the House floor.

Check out what The Hill reported:

Rep. Steve Scalise (La.) came out on top as House Republicans met Wednesday to pick their nominee for Speaker.

The conference was closely divided between the House majority leader from Louisiana and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). Indeed the final vote was close — a win by 14 votes.

The vote came after Republicans killed a proposal to change the nominating process that was intended to avoid a messy floor fight.

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) ouster last week was unprecedented, and the days since have featured curveball after curveball.

And as they struggle to come to a consensus, Republicans are staring down a looming government funding deadline and the outbreak of war in Israel.
