Man Dives Head First Into 9/11 Reflecting Pond, Falls 30 Feet

WARNING: yes, there is video and some may find it disturbing.  Viewer discretion is advised.

Most reports say the man “jumped” but I’ve never seen anyone jump by rolling head first.

And that’s exactly what happened here.

A 33-year old man (interesting age) hopped into the 9/11 Memorial reflecting pond and then slowly waded up to the opening in the center.

Of course this caught a lot of attention and he eventually got to the edge, where he laid down and wiggled up to the edge.

He then slowly dove in, head first, leaving behind what looked to me like a trail of blood.

The fall from that point down is reported to be 30 feet.

It is indeed a strange spot to pick:

NBC News reports the following details:

The incident unfolded at about 1:30 p.m. ET, when police were called to the north pool at the 9/11 Memorial and found the 33-year-old man had jumped in, police said.

An emergency medical services team helped the man, who injured his left leg and back in the incident, into an ambulance, authorities said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for the non-life-threatening injuries, and charges are pending, officials said.

The man was described as an “apparently emotionally disturbed person,” a Port Authority spokesperson said.

Later, security guards were spotted erecting chains around the pool to discourage anyone else from jumping in.

“We saw the firefighters and emergency personnel come down the escalator as we were into the memorial,” tourist Lisa Bellow told CBS News. “They said everything’s fine, but they were coming in and going to a, like, back room, and we figured that down there was where they could access.”
