Graphic Video Shows Man Attacking Female Police Officer with a Hammer

Police are under more scrutiny than anyone else when it comes to split second decisions they are forced to make on the job.

This next story reveals what happens when those decisions aren’t made quickly enough.

Graphic police cam footage showed a female Connecticut police officer fighting for her very survival after she was charged by a man with a hammer.

On August 12, Detective Karli Travis was the first officer on the scene responding to a call about noise and breaking glass in a residential area.

As she approached the home, 52-year-old Winston Tate started walking towards her with a hammer.

Travis asked Tate to drop the weapon, but he refused, and began charging her.

Travis fell to the ground and defended herself by firing her pistol.

Both suffered mild injuries before police backup arrived and arrested the suspect.

Daily Mail has the horrifying details of this attack:

Graphic bodycam footage shows the moment a police officer fought for her life as she was charged to the ground and repeatedly battered with a claw hammer.

Connecticut Detective Karli Travis, 52, has been hailed as a hero for fighting off Winston Tate after responding to a report of noise and breaking glass on a street in Middletown on Saturday, August 12.

In the footage Tate is seen emerging from his home and running towards the cop who calmly asks him to drop the hammer.

But Tate, who has twice been jailed for attacks on officers, struck Travis four times before she took her gun and shot him, injuring him slightly.

She was hailed for an ‘extreme act of heroism’ by the town’s police chief as Tate appeared in court where he bizarrely attempted to take off his clothes as the judge addressed him on Tuesday.

Here’s the disturbing bodycam footage:

The New York Post provided more details:

As Travis radioed for backup from her colleagues, Tate is seen in body camera footage charging towards her, wielding a hammer.

Body camera footage shows violence immediately ensue as Tate tackles the police officer and the pair begins thrashing around.

Chief McCallister said that the detective attempted to distance herself from her attacker and continued telling the suspect to put the hammer down.

Travis eventually takes out her handgun and begins rapidly firing at Tate.

Police said that she was “fighting for her life,” while Tate repeatedly beat her with the hammer.

This is a scary reminder of how little time police officers have to respond to threats of violence.
