JUST IN: Ron DeSantis Involved in Car Accident

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was involved in a car accident Tuesday morning in Tennessee, according to his campaign.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was involved in a car accident Tuesday morning in Tennessee, according to his campaign.

The GOP presidential candidate reportedly was uninjured in the accident.

“This morning, the governor was in a car accident while traveling to an event in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He and his team are uninjured,” Bryan Griffin, his press secretary, said in a statement.

“We appreciate the prayers and well wishes of the nation for his continued protection while on the campaign trail.”

NBC News reports:

The 44-year-old Republican presidential contender was scheduled to participate in a fundraiser Tuesday in Chattanooga, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

The campaign statement didn’t provide additional details about the car accident, such as how it occurred and how many people or vehicles were involved.

The Chattanooga Police Department said in a statement later in the morning that “a female staffer did suffer a minor injury, but continued on to the event and was treated there.” The statement didn’t identify the staff member. NBC News has reached out to DeSantis’ campaign for clarity on Griffin’s original statement that there were no injuries.

The police department said the “crash” involved only DeSantis’ four-vehicle motorcade on I-75 South just below East Brainerd Road and a call about the accident was made around 8:15 a.m.

“The motorcade came up on slow traffic and the lead vehicle had to brake quickly, which caused a rear-end collision involving the other vehicles,” the police statement said. “All the vehicles involved were government vehicles accompanying Governor DeSantis and his team to his scheduled event.”
