Judge Assigned to Donald Trump Case Reportedly Disclosed

According to ABC News, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, will be assigned to oversee his case.

However, the assignment appears to be temporary.

The outlet said sources indicated Judge Cannon “initially” will be assigned to the case.

Judge Cannon is the same judge who appointed a “special master” last year to review the materials seized from Mar-a-Lago.

ABC News reports:

Cannon’s apparent assignment would add yet another unprecedented wrinkle to a case involving the first federal charges against a former president: Trump appointed Cannon to the federal bench in 2020, meaning that, if Trump is ultimately convicted, she would be responsible for determining the sentence – which may include prison time – for the man who elevated her to the role.

A federal grand jury voted to indict Trump on at least seven federal charges late Thursday as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. The indictment comes after more than 100 documents with classified markings were found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in August 2022.

Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and claimed again late Thursday that he was innocent.

Cannon is no stranger to the case. The 42-year-old judge appointed a “special master” last year to review those materials seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Legal experts accused Cannon of handing Trump a series of head-scratching victories over the course of those proceedings.

“Oh boy you can see the Left raging that this case has been temporarily assigned to Judge Aileen Cannon,” American Greatness Senior writer Julie Kelly wrote.

“Cannon’s name appeared on the summons for Donald Trump’s Tuesday appearance, as did Judge Bruce Reinhart, who approved the warrant to search the former president’s Florida home,” according to The Hill.

The Hill noted:

Cannon was twice overturned by a higher court, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, which both greenlit the DOJ’s use of the documents and disbanded the special master process.

“It is indeed extraordinary for a warrant to be executed at the home of a former president — but not in a way that affects our legal analysis or otherwise gives the judiciary license to interfere in an ongoing investigation,” the appeals court determined.

A message left with Cannon’s chambers was not immediately returned.

Joyce Vance, an attorney who helped draft a model prosecution memo in the case, warned about getting “too spun up” about Cannon’s inclusion, noting the 11th Circuit can order a reassessment, “where a judge leans so heavily for a defendant they call their objectivity in the eyes of the public into question.”
