Smoke from Canadian wildfires covered New York City and the Tri-State in an unhealthy haze, holding up flights at major airports, postponing Major League Baseball games, and prompting people to wear pandemic-era face masks.

The streets of New York City turned hues of orange on Wednesday afternoon as the city topped the list of worst air quality in the world.

Mayor Eric Adams called the Air Quality Alert an, “unprecedented event in our city and New Yorkers must take precautions.”

He said the Air Quality Index hit 484 at 5:00 p.m. – the max on the scale is 500. Anything above 300 on the government’s air quality index is considered “hazardous.”

NBC News covered the story too:

The smoke from ferocious Canadian wildfires cast a sickly pall over much of the eastern U.S. today, worsening air quality for millions of people. The air was acrid, skylines looked orange, and municipal officials told people to stay indoors. The National Weather Service does not expect things will get much better tomorrow.

About 115 million people were under air quality alerts because of wildfire smoke and ozone from Texas to Vermont on Wednesday evening. For smoke alone, around 90 million were under alerts across 16 states.

Flights are being grounded due to the smoke:
