Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) was hospitalized Saturday after he broke his leg during a parade for the UCONN men’s basketball championship-winning team.
Another parade attendee tripped and fell on top of Blumenthal, breaking the 77-year-old’s femur.
The senator will undergo surgery Sunday.
“What can I say, I love a parade! Thanks to Chris & everyone for the well wishes. I did indeed fracture my femur after a fellow parade goer tripped & fell on me during the parade today. Routine surgery tomorrow just to make sure everything heals properly. I expect a full recovery!” Blumenthal tweeted.

News 12 Connecticut reported:
Sen. Richard Blumenthal told News 12 Connecticut that he fractured his femur and is expected to undergo surgery Sunday, following a mishap at the UConn Huskies victory parade in Hartford.
ADVERTISEMENTThe senator said someone was taking video of him during the procession tripped and fell on top of him, causing the injury.
Blumenthal was alert, and in good spirits, when he spoke with News 12 Connecticut by phone Saturday night.
Blumenthal, 77, is currently serving his third term as U.S. senator. He was also the state’s attorney general.
The New York Post added:
Sen. Chris Murphy, who also attended the festivities, lauded his Connecticut colleague for continuing on with the parade even after he had become injured.
“FYI after he broke his femur he got back up, dusted himself off, and FINISHED THE PARADE,” the fellow Connecticut Democrat tweeted. “Most Dick Blumenthal thing ever.”
Connecticut State Rep. Matt Blumenthal said in a tweet that his father “was also on the reviewing stand for a while. Tough as nails, and on the mend shortly!”
Nearly 45,000 fans went out to celebrate UConn’s fifth claim to the men’s basketball national title on Saturday, NBC Connecticut reported.

Our friends at The Gateway Pundit noted that Blumenthal adds to the list of U.S. Senators hospitalized in recent weeks.
Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA), 89, was recently hospitalized for shingles.
Senator Mitch McConnell (KY), 81, was recently hospitalized after a fall.
Senator John Fetterman (PA), was hospitalized for 2 months for ‘severe depression’ after having a massive stroke last year.
