Airman Found De*d After Shooting Near Air Force Base, Another Injured


A shooting near a U.S. Air Force base in New Mexico on Saturday resulted in the death of one airman.

Another airman sustained injuries from the incident.

The shooting occurred near one of the entrances to Kirtland Air Force Base around 2 a.m. Saturday morning.

“The injured airman was treated at the University of New Mexico Medical Center and has since been released. Details on what exactly went down? Still a mystery,” Mario Nawfal wrote.

“The base says there’s no threat to the public, but they’ve shut down the Truman Gate and Visitor Center just in case. Officials are investigating the shooting,” he added.

Kirtland Air Force base said the 377th Security Forces Squadron was called to an incident at approximately 2 a.m.

“One Airman received a nonfatal gunshot wound to the hand and was transported to UNM Medical Center for treatment. He has since been released with no life-threatening injuries,” according to a press release from the Air Force.

“The other Airman was found dead at the scene. The cause of death and the incident remains under investigation by local authorities.”

Kirtland Truman Gate Pass office remains closed until further notice according to the authorities. Military officials said the incident was not caused by an outside attack or an act of terrorism.

The Air Force has not released the names of the victim or the shooter.

An update in the afternoon said the shooting occurred following “an off-base pursuit.” There was no threat to the public, it said.

The Air Force released few other details and did not immediately say whether anyone was in custody. A spokesperson declined to say whether the shooter or shooters also were airmen.

The names of the airmen who were shot were not immediately released.

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations was leading the probe.

FBI investigators were also at the scene being helped by Albuquerque police, said Gilbert Gallegos, a police spokesperson. Police were not searching for any suspects, he added.
