Zelensky CAVES to President Trump, Will Sign Mineral Deal Imminently

Well, that was fast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reportedly already agreed to signing President Trump’s proposed minerals deal, which would force Ukraine to pay the United States back for military aid in rare earth minerals worth around $500 billion.

In effect, this is a total surrender on the part of Zelensky, who formerly pushed back at President Trump over the demands.

A few hours ago, Zelensky spoke a very different tune in a video address, claiming that U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators are currently at work on a draft agreement, which will be signed imminently.

President Trump also confirmed to reporters in the Oval Office this evening that an official agreement is in the works, “hopefully in the next fairly short period of time.”

From Daily Mail:

Donald Trump appears to have won his trade standoff with Volodymyr Zelensky, as the Ukrainian president is set to give in and sign a deal giving the U.S. access to deposits of critical minerals.

The deal was seen as crucial for satisfying Washington’s demands for a peace settlement between Ukraine and Russia to end their three-year long war.

Zelensky told a nightly video address on Friday that teams of American and Ukrainian negotiators are working on a draft agreement, signaling an imminent deal.

‘This is an agreement that can strengthen our relations, and the key is to work out the details to ensure its effectiveness,’ he said. ‘I look forward to the outcome – a just result.’

It’s a staggering surrender by Zelensky, who just days earlier angrily lashed out at Trump saying: ‘I can’t sell our country.’

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday evening: ‘We’re signing an agreement, hopefully in the next fairly short period of time.’

A deal could be struck as soon as Saturday, people briefed on negotiations told the Wall Street Journal. The exact terms are not yet clear, however Trump had been pushing for $500 billion worth of minerals in exchange for continued military support.

The Trump administration appeared to be making progress on Friday toward a deal that would give the United States valuable mineral rights in Ukraine.

The movement came after a week in which President Trump, initially rebuffed on an agreement, turned up the pressure by assailing Ukraine and suggesting he would side with Russia in seeking to end the war there.

Mr. Trump boasted at the White House that he was nearing a deal that could bring up to $500 billion to the United States. “So we’re signing an agreement, hopefully in the next fairly short period of time,” he said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine likewise said his country was working on a draft agreement between the two governments, seemingly tamping down the tensions that had flared with Mr. Trump over a deal.

“This agreement can add value to our relations — what matters most is getting the details right to ensure it truly works,” Mr. Zelensky said in a social media post on Friday.
