Rep. Comer Addresses Speculation That He Will Run For McConnell’s Soon-To-Be-Vacant Seat

After years of waning influence within the party and multiple incidents that fueled concerns about his health, former Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stepped down from his leadership position last year but made it clear that he would not be resigning from the chamber.

This week, however, he confirmed that the current term, his seventh in the Senate, would be his last. His seat is up for another election next year.

Naturally, that sparked speculation about who might launch a campaign to replace him, with Rep. James Comer (R-KY) emerging as among the likeliest candidates.

He was asked about the possibility recently and immediately shot it down, as The Hill reported:

“I’ve made it very clear I’m not running for the Senate,” Comer told The Hill on Thursday. “Maybe governor on down the road, but … not Senate.”
