‘It’s Possible’: President Trump Teases Trade Deal With China, Touts ‘Great Relationship With President Xi’

Among the many priorities of President Donald Trump’s second term is renegotiating trade deals around the world that have previously been working against America’s interests.

While the threat of tariffs have been getting most of the media attention, the Trump administration has also been conducting negotiations with world leaders to possibly avoid implementing them.

Those efforts appear to already be showing signs of success, including in China.

According to the Daily Caller:

“It’s possible. It’s possible,” Trump told reporters when asked about the possibility of a new trade deal with China aboard Air Force One. “We did a great trade deal with China, great for the farmers, great for the manufacturers. They had to buy $50 billion worth of our product and we were making them buy it. The problem is that Biden didn’t push them to adhere to [it].”

Beijing reportedly began gearing up to begin trade discussions with the U.S. government shortly after Trump announced the new slate of tariffs. Ahead of his inauguration, Trump said that he had a conversation with Xi over the phone about fentanyl, trade and other subjects, stating that the conversation was “a very good one.”

Notably, there have been mounting concerns about the threat that China poses to U.S. national security amid Beijing’s ongoing attempts to expand its global influence. There have also been thousands of Chinese nationals attempting to come into the U.S. illegally in recent years.

Trump’s efforts to put America’s interests first in trade negotiations have been widely discussed on social media since his inauguration:

GOP Nebraska Gov. Jim Pollen recently wrote an op-ed for the Washington Examiner explaining how Trump’s approach to trade is already paying dividends in America’s heartland:

During his campaign, the president promised to establish an America First trade policy in defense of our farmers and ranchers. Promises made, promises kept. We’re the breadbasket of the world, and that’s why we need to make sure our international trade framework sets all of us, everyday families and producers in the United States, up for success.

Trade hinges on the idea of mutual economic benefit — it’s a great goal, and it’s good for everyone. But we aren’t playing in a “free trade” space anymore, certainly not with foreign adversaries and trade manipulators such as China on the scene. Agriculture has to rely on trade. We know it, and we depend on it. However, the status quo just isn’t working.

My home is in a deep-red state known for agriculture. Corn and cattle are king here, but my family and I raise pigs. The U.S. pork industry raises the highest quality, most affordable, and safest pork in the world. We also supply more than the domestic market demands, so we have to export roughly 30% of fresh and frozen pork. If we can’t export pork, prices plummet and producers go out of business.

Here’s a clip of Trump’s recent remarks on the topic:
