In 2023, President Trump denounced Jack Smith as “deranged”.
On a Truth Social post, he said Jack Smith should be the one in jail along with his “thug” prosecutors.
And considering all that Jack Smith has done, which now includes disclosing a $140,000 “gift” of free legal services, President Trump could end up getting what he wished for.
Here’s the full text of the President’s post from July 28, 2023:
They ought to throw Deranged Jack Smith and his Thug Prosecutors in jail, with Meritless Garland and Trump Hating Lisa Monaco. They have totally Weaponized the Department of Injustice. Whatever happened to the Crooked Joe Biden Boxes Case? Why was Hillary Clinton allowed to delete 33,000 emails, many of them Classified, AFTER getting a Subpoena from Congress? Why was Bill Clinton allowed to take tapes out of the W.H. in his socks? Why has no other President ever been charged? ELECTION FRAUD!
Yes, you heard that right.
Jack Smith has disclosed a “gift” of $140K in “gifted legal services” from the democrat-linked (think Eric Holder) legal firm Covington & Burling while he still worked for the DOJ.

The pro-bono legal assistance from Covington & Burling was first reported after Jack Smith filed a disclosure in January as part of his separation from the Department of Justice.
The reason Smith sought outside lawyers isn’t known at this point, according to a report in the New York Post:
The former special counsel who brought two criminal cases against President Donald Trump received $140,000 in free legal services from a prominent Washington law firm last month.
Covington & Burling provided Jack Smith with the gift of pro-bono legal assistance, Politico first reported citing a disclosure he filed last month in connection with him leaving the Justice Department.
It’s unclear why Smith sought outside lawyers, but Trump had repeatedly ripped Smith and his team, vowing to fire them and strongly suggesting they should be criminally prosecuted.
Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this month directed the Justice Department in a memo to examine its “weaponization” under the Biden administration, specifically, “Special Counsel Jack Smith and his staff who spent more than $50 million targeting President Trump, and the prosecutors and law enforcement personnel who participated in the unprecedented raid on President Trump’s home.”
However, there’s been no criminal, civil or legal ethics probe of Smith’s actions.
While there has been no disclosure as to the reason for Jack Smith’s outside legal counsel, it shouldn’t be hard to present that general reason.
As Jonathan Turley points out, such a “gift” would have needed to be approved in some way by the Department of Justice in order to maintain at least the veil of propriety.
And that means a reason for seeking the legal services should exist.
Politico reported that Special Counsel Jack Smith received $140,000 in free legal services from Covington & Burling, a firm with strong Democratic ties including partner Eric Holder. If the DOJ approved this arrangement, it should be able to confirm the general purpose…

In lieu of that information, we can only speculate the purpose for the outside counsel.
There is the fact that Pamela Bondi directed the creation of a working group on her first day at the DOJ with the express purpose of investigating the weaponization of the Justice Department by Jack Smith, according to Politico:
Although no criminal, civil or legal ethics probe of Smith’s actions has been announced by the department, she specifically instructed the working group to examine “Weaponization by Special Counsel Jack Smith and his staff who spent more than $50 million targeting President Trump, and the prosecutors and law enforcement personnel who participated in the unprecedented raid on President Trump’s home.”
Covington’s representation of Smith was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
In President Joe Biden’s final days in office, there was widespread speculation about whether Biden might pardon Smith and his team. Biden eventually issued preemptive pardons for members of the House Jan. 6 Committee, former National Institutes of Health Director Anthony Fauci and former Joint Chiefs Chair Mark Milley.
However, no pardon for DOJ prosecutors was ever issued.
Smith has ties to several prominent lawyers at Covington, the law firm with the largest presence in D.C.
ADVERTISEMENTCovington is also home to a number of other prominent Justice Department officials, including President Barack Obama’s first attorney general, Eric Holder. Another Covington partner, Alan Vinegrad, was the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York during part of Smith’s tenure there and assigned him to prosecute a prominent police abuse case.
The Justice Department appears to have approved Smith’s request under an Office of Government Ethics regulation issued in 2023 that allows government employees to set up legal defense funds or take such services for free if the work is related to “the employee’s past or current official position” or to a position on a presidential campaign or transition team. The rule says such arrangements must be cleared by an agency ethics official and reported on an employee’s financial disclosure.
While the “gift” doesn’t necessitate wrongdoing or any broken laws, the obvious potential for ethics violations should require answers.
As Sean Davis posted, it should not be legal for a law firm with clients and business currently proceeding before the Department of Justice to give $140K in FREE SERVICES to a top DOJ official!
Much less a DOJ official whose primary mission is to go after a former President in the running for a 2nd term!
How on earth is it legal for a law firm with clients and business before DOJ to provide $140,000 in free gifts to a top DOJ official?
DOJ rules and federal regulations explicitly prohibit officials like Jack Smith from accepting or soliciting gifts.

I have to agree with Bo Loudon — the evidence tampering and Mar-a-Lago raid fiasco were enough to land Jack Smith in prison.
But now he has admitted to accepting $140K in “gifted” legal services from a democrat-controlled law firm — while he’s advancing cases against a former President heading for a possible 2nd term?
Jack Smith JUST admitted to taking $140,000 in "gifted" legal services.
Jack Smith ASLO tampered with evidence & brought incriminating PROPS to the Mar-a-Lago raid.
JUST evidence tampering is a third-degree felony, punishable by 2-10 YEARS IN PRISON!
Why isn't Jack in PRISON? pic.twitter.com/LILGfYGPcM

I’m not sure how much more inappropriate you could get in this instance.
Jack Smith would have had to have been found sleeping with the witnesses in order to cross any more red lines than this infraction crosses.
Enough is enough. It’s time to investigate fully, bring charges, and jail the man.
Jack Smith’s days of targeting political enemies of his friends is over, and this should be the final straw that sets his eventual imprisonment in motion.
