When Elon Musk purchased Twitter and began prioritizing free speech before changing the name of the platform to X, many on the left were enraged over the possibility that parody accounts and other forms of so-called misinformation would be able to flourish on the site.
In reality, though, common sense and features like “Community Notes” seem to allow most users to separate fact from fiction — except, that is, for Democrats like Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT).
As Breitbart reported, he recently fumed in response to a post he mistakenly believed was posted by or on behalf of President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump:
An X account with the handle “@laratrumppage” (not to be confused with the real page of President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, @LaraLeaTrump) made a post calling for border czar Tom Homan to arrest Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, completely triggering Murphy on Friday:
“It takes some fucking gall to have Vance lecturing Europe on ‘free speech’ when at the exact same time the Trump regime is threatening Democrats back home with arrest if they even explain people’s rights to them,” Murphy wrote, along with a screenshot of the fake Lara’s post.
His profane response came after Vice President JD Vance spoke at the Munich Security Conference in Germany last week, lambasting the “censorship” of “so-called misinformation.”
Here’s Murphy’s post and the White House rapid response team’s reply:

You are a moron, Chris. It is obvious this page is not affiliated with President Trump, his family, or the administration.
We do, however, support your right to make such a statement, no matter how imbecilic it makes you look. https://t.co/B7AYRAjJ46

Similarly provocative posts were published by parody accounts based on other notable Trump administration figures, including Kash Patel, who is facing Senate confirmation to become the next director of the FBI:
🚨 BREAKING: Do you support Border Czar Tom Homan & AG Pam Bondi arresting AOC for instructing illegal aliens on how to avoid deportation?
YES or NO?
If YES, give me a THUMBS-UP (👍)! pic.twitter.com/DsuqPVyxHQ

So what did Ocasio-Cortez do to kick off this ongoing firestorm? Per Fox News:
The 54-minute live stream was aimed at migrants living in Ocasio-Cortez’s 14th District, which covers parts of Queens and the Bronx.
Ocasio-Cortez did not take part in the webinar but did upload tips to Instagram – via posters in both English and Spanish – and called on her followers to share the posters widely and study them.
“Our strategic advantage in this moment is our strength in numbers,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “It is time to use it. In nearly every way, we outnumber those who want to abuse their power and keep people in fear. The truth is, they cannot come after us all. That is why they actively USE and create fear: to get us to give up in advance and withdraw from public life without them lifting a finger.”
She also called on her followers to print out the posters and “tape them up in your workplace or keep them by your door.”
“So if ICE comes to your workplace or home, whether you are a citizen or noncitizen – YOU can defend your community and our constitution by exercising your right,” she wrote.
Here’s some additional commentary on her efforts to thwart the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown:
