JD Vance seemingly set off a firestorm of European sensitivities with his emphasis on free speech this past week at the NATO summit.
But it was Marco Rubio who caught the flame sparked by Vance.
In a strange pushback against the audacity of the Vice President for upholding free speech before a meeting up supposed democratic allies, the Secretary of State caught fire in response to a twisted version of reality.
To give you a feel for JD Vance’s tone, here’s a short clip of some of his remarks at the Munich Security Conference over the weekend:

To put it mildly, JD Vance straight up spit fire about the encroaching authoritarian and dystopian regimes manifesting throughout Europe.
At this very moment there are Gestapo-like squads of officers being dispatched to European homes in order to arrest and jail individuals who “liked” or shared the wrong social media post.
It is despicable, and it is not fitting that America call those nations allies for much longer if they continue down those archaic paths.
And JD Vance called them out.
Fast forward, and CBS anchor Margaret Brennan was diligently searching for a point of attack from which to call JD Vance’s blatant call for liberty into question.
She ultimately landed on a popular topic among democrats, progressives, and anti-freedom crowds: the Nazis.
In her attempt to paint Vance’s speech as rude or presumptuous during her interview with Marco Rubio, Brennan ended up claiming that the systematic murder of millions by the Nazi regime in the Holocaust was due to unrestrained free speech.
Or, as she put it, “weaponized” free speech.
You won’t believe it if you don’t see the clip for yourself, so here it is:

Thankfully, Marco Rubio quickly dealt with his initial shock.
And then he corrected the CBS anchor, and set the record straight.
In no way, shape, or form did the Nazi Holocaust stem from free speech.
And the fact that we have to routinely push back against the asinine absurdity of statements such as that is a terrible indicator of just how much damage the last four years did to the country.
Just before the holocaust statement, Brennan asked Rubio what the speech accomplished other than irritating our allies, according to a Fox News report:
Brennan highlighted Vance’s speech to the Munich Security Conference in Germany last week, which criticized European allies for adopting a “soviet”-style approach to censorship.
“What did all of this accomplish, other than irritating our allies?” Brennan asked.
“Why would our allies or anybody be irritated by free speech and by someone giving their opinion? We are, after all, democracies,” Rubio said. “The Munich Security Conference is largely a conference of democracies in which one of the things that we cherish and value is the ability to speak freely and provide your opinions. And so, I think if anyone’s angry about his words, they don’t have to agree with him, but to be angry about it, I think actually makes his point.”
“Well, he was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide,” Brennan replied. “He met with the head of a political party that has far-right views and some historic ties to extreme groups. The context of that was changing the tone of it. And you know that.”
“Well, I have to disagree with you. No – I have, I have to disagree with you,” Rubio said as the pair talked over one another. “Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide. The genocide was conducted by an authoritarian Nazi regime that happened to also be genocidal because they hated Jews and they hated minorities and they had a list of people they hated, but primarily the Jews.”
He added, “There was no free speech in Nazi Germany. There was none. There was also no opposition in Nazi Germany. They were the sole and only party that governed that country. So that’s not an accurate reflection of history.”
Rubio went on to reiterate Vance’s point that European leaders should be able to continue working with the U.S. and other like-minded nations despite facing criticism, at which point Brennan ended the segment.

And wouldn’t you know it — apparently JD Vance got so far under the skin of the European elites that they simply couldn’t respond in any other way other than melting down.
Here’s the German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius (what a gloriously fitting name) completely distraught that Vance would say such mean and hurtful things about the governments of Europe.

Looks like Vance's speech was a success.

“If I understood him correctly, he compares the condition of Europe with the condition that prevails in some authoritarian regimes.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, this is not acceptable. This is not acceptable. This is not the Europe where I live.”
Lord Sumption, former judge on the UK’s Supreme Court, took JD Vance’s speech even harder than Boris Pistorius.
Here’s Sumption almost unable to control his anger at having been called on the carpet by JD Vance.

“Democracy and free speech are certainly under challenge in many European countries.. The challenge is not coming from governments”
“These criticisms are pretty rich coming from a President who is quite uniquely authoritarian”
“Democracy and free speech are under challenge in a much bigger way in the United States, and his boss, Donald Trump, is the man who is mainly responsible for that”
Marco Rubio was so taken aback after his exchange on Face the Nation that I think he must have felt the need to reiterate his point, in case it had somehow been missed.
Under President Trump, American leadership is back. That includes free speech, bold diplomacy that puts our nation first, and peace through strength.
Made that clear during my interview with @FaceTheNation.https://t.co/3aCZMzdLNQ

In spite of the pushback from the European leaders, the reality of the dark cloud of government control is definitely casting a growing shadow over the cities of Europe.
JD Vance cited a litany of anti-democratic examples during his speech, according to a report by the New York Post:
He cited a litany of shocking anti-democratic examples to prove his point.
EU Commission “commissars’” plan to shut down social media during times of civil unrest and conduct police raids on people suspected of spreading “misogyny” on the internet.
In the United Kingdom, a military veteran was charged with “the heinous crime of standing 50 meters from an abortion clinic and silently praying for three minutes.”
Vance then cited former European Commissioner Thierry Breton’s threat to cancel elections that don’t accord with elite priorities.
If the right-wing, populist, anti-immigration AfD party were to win the upcoming elections in Germany, the election could simply be canceled by the European Union, “as was done in Romania,” Breton blithely told French TV last month.
“We did it in Romania and we will obviously have to do it if necessary in Germany,” he said. “We have to enforce this law to protect our democracies in Europe.”
In other words, Europe has to destroy democracy to save it.
Breton is the same floppy-haired Euro-tyrant who, when he was in office as Europe’s chief bureaucrat, last August at the height of the US presidential campaign, sent a threatening letter to Elon Musk to try to derail his X interview with Donald Trump and demanding “compliance” with EU regulations on “hate speech.”
It took a certain amount of chutzpah, therefore, for the Eurocrats to accuse Vance of “blatant election interference in the [German] election campaign in favor of far-right AfD,” as Carl Bildt, co-chair of the European Council on Foreign Relations and former Swedish prime minister, put it.
No, Vance did Europe a favor with his blunt talk.
It can either heed his advice or retreat into the darkest errors of its past, the tragedy that silly Margaret Brennan inadvertently invoked.
While disturbing to watch how many people on both sides of the Atlantic have twisted versions of freedom verses tyranny, the fact is most people have lost the clarity to know the difference.
There are instances, particularly during our recent elections, when the majority of the diatribe coming from U.S. democrat party leaders was obviously lies — they did not believe the wild accusations they were uttering.
They were simply devices intended to win an election.
But the fact is, most people truly do not have a good grip on the reality of freedom, tyranny, or the course from one to the other.
In a world on the brink, that is a terrifying reality.
There are literal fascists calling themselves “anti-fascists”.
And there are European tyrants who somehow believe that unchecked freedom is the most likely doorway through which tyranny will enter.
These people truly believe that it is their duty to manage and control the “freedoms” of the masses, in order to protect them from their own lack of self-governance.
None of these elitists realize that if they evaporated from the planet tomorrow, the rest of humanity would seamlessly push forward — likely better off for their absence.
But good luck making them see the wisdom of that logic.
You’re more likely to convince them of your heartfelt love of tyranny, in the process, than you are to set these people straight.
Unfortunately, considering how far gone their thinking is on these issues, it may take relearning the lessons of the last century all over again for most people to finally come around.
And with Europe seemingly resistant to stopping their march towards war with Russia, they might just get that learning opportunity once again, if Europe’s leaders don’t wake up and realize their history is about to repeat itself.
