And, another one bites the dust…
Rhode Island U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha had just resigned.
Originally appointed by Joe Biden, Cunha was notified by the White House that President Trump was ordering him to step down.
He officially complied with that request today.

The Justice Department released this statement on Cunha’s resignation:
Zachary A. Cunha announced today that he has stepped down from his position as United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island, effective immediately, after receiving notification from the White House that the President has directed him to do so. Mr. Cunha previously tendered a letter of resignation to the President and the Attorney General on February 7, 2025, in which he indicated his intent to leave office at the end of this week. U.S. Attorney Cunha made the following statement:
I am deeply grateful to Senators Reed and Whitehouse for recommending my nomination to the White House, and to President Biden for his trust and confidence in appointing me to serve this extraordinary District and its citizens as United States Attorney. I have worked hard every day to live up to the example of excellence set by my thirty-eight distinguished predecessors over the 235-year history of this Office, and it has been the honor of my career to do this job.
Over the three years that I have had the high privilege to serve as U.S. Attorney, it has been my constant goal to make sure that the work of this District punched far above the weight that our compact geography and small staff might imply. By every measure, the men and women of this Office have met that goal, again and again, across every category in which we prosecute and litigate on behalf of the people of the Ocean State.
The Boston Globe has more:
Zachary Cunha has resigned as US attorney for Rhode Island at the direction of the White House, his office announced Monday.
Cunha, who was nominated by President Biden to be US attorney in 2021, was not expected to stay on under President Trump. He was the final US attorney from New England to leave, after Maine’s US Attorney Darcie McElwee was terminated earlier Monday.
A spokesperson said Cunha submitted a resignation letter to the Trump administration on Feb. 7 indicating he would step down at the end of this week. The White House notification came Monday. It’s customary for new administrations to replace US attorneys…
It was not immediately clear who Trump plans to name as the top federal prosecutor for Rhode Island, but multiple lawyers have expressed interest, including former Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice Robert G. Flanders Jr.

Meanwhile, President Trump is beginning to nominate his own U.S. Attorneys…
Just today, he selected Acting D.C. U.S. Attorney to the “full and permanent term” of U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C.
Here’s his Truth Social post on the pick:
It remains to be seen who President Trump will tap to fulfill Cunha’s empty role, but I have a feeling we are going to find out very soon.
And, you can bet it will be a judge dedicated to helping President Trump fulfill his mandate to the American people!
