Volodomyr Zelensky Claims Russian Drone Strikes Chernobyl

Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky claimed a “Russian attack drone” struck the shelter protecting the radioactive reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

“Last night, a Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead struck the shelter protecting the world from radiation at the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This shelter was built by Ukraine together with other countries of Europe and the world, together with America – all those committed to real security for humanity. The only country in the world that attacks such sites, occupies nuclear power plants, and wages war without any regard for the consequences is today’s Russia. This is a terrorist threat to the entire world,” Zelensky wrote.

“The shelter at the Chornobyl NPP was damaged by this drone. The fire has been extinguished. As of now, radiation levels have not increased and are being constantly monitored. According to initial assessments, the damage to the shelter is significant,” he continued.

“Every night, Russia carries out such attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure and cities. Russia continues to expand its army and shows no change in its deranged, anti-human state rhetoric. This means that Putin is definitely not preparing for negotiations — he is preparing to continue deceiving the world. That is why there must be unified pressure from all who value life – pressure on the aggressor. Russia must be held accountable for its actions,” he added.

From the New York Post:

The Chernobyl plant is the site of the world’s first level 7 nuclear energy accidents, when Reactor 4 suffered a power surge resulting in steam explosions and a meltdown on April 26, 1986.

Security camera footage shared by Zelensky captured the moment a bright flash lit up the dark sky at the defunct power plant before a large fireball rose from the domed roof of the confinement structure.

Aerial footage captured flames shooting from the hole before additional video showed what appeared to be the burned remains of the drone inside.

Zelensky claimed the attack caused significant damage to the structure and ignited a fire.

The blaze has since been extinguished.

Radiation levels have not risen since the attack and officials continue to monitor the readings.

The reported attack happened just after 2 a.m. 62 miles north of Kyiv.

Zelensky blasted Russia for the dangerous attack, saying the structure was built by many European countries “committed to real security of the world.”

Numerous X users expressed skepticism of Zelensky’s claims and questioned if the incident could be a false flag.

“The Russian government claims that last night’s drone strike on the former Chernobyl nuclear plant was a false flag attack by Zelensky’s administration—not the Russian military. Maria Zakharova alleges the attack was deliberately timed ahead of the Munich Conference, just like last year’s alleged strike on a children’s hospital. She concluded by saying that Ukraine’s goal is to portray itself as a victim and continue begging for financial aid,” Shadow of Ezra wrote.

The Moscow Times reports:

The European Union’s top diplomat said that any talks between the United States and Russia were now “obsolete” following a drone strike at Ukraine’s Chernobyl nuclear power plant that Kyiv blamed on Moscow.

“It clearly shows that [the Russians] don’t want peace,” EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told journalists on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. “All these other talks have been totally obsolete because of the bombing of the nuclear station, bombing of civilians, bombing of civilian infrastructure.

“What is up to us right now is to decide and discuss how we support Ukraine right now in this endeavor because our values haven’t changed, the goals of Russia haven’t changed either, so we need to stick to our ground and really see what is at stake here.”

Earlier this week at the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Kallas had accused U.S. President Donald Trump of “appeasement” following his conversation with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and stressed that any peace deal must be negotiated with European and Ukrainian involvement.

Trump’s Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to meet Friday during the three-day conference in southern Germany. Zelensky told journalists on Friday that he did not believe Washington had a “ready-made plan” to end the war.
