King of Jordan Meets President Trump At White House

President Trump sat down with Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House on Tuesday.

The visit comes just days after President Trump declared the United States would take over Gaza.

During the visit, Trump and Abdullah II discussed Jordan potentially taking in refugees from Gaza.

Here’s what The Hill reported:

President Donald Trump welcomed Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House Tuesday, a visit that comes amid contentious discussions between the U.S. and Arab nations about relocating Palestinian refugees to Jordan and other neighboring Arab countries to rebuild Gaza.

Trump unveiled plans on Feb. 4 that the U.S. would seek to “take over” the Gaza Strip in a “long-term ownership position” to deliver stability to the region during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

But Trump’s proposal prompted swift backlash from Arab countries including Jordan, and Egypt announced plans on Sunday for an emergency Arab Summit to discuss “new and dangerous developments” regarding the resettling of Palestinians on Feb. 27.

Trump doubled down on his plans though in an interview that aired Monday with Fox News Chief Political Anchor Bret Baier, and said that he expects Abdullah ultimately will choose to let in Palestinians.

“I do think he’ll take, and I think other countries will take also,” Trump told Baier. “They have good hearts.”

Per ABC News:

The Trump administration is gearing up for potentially contentious meetings with Arab power players this week as President Donald Trump continues to press his plan for what he calls U.S. “ownership” of Gaza, going so far as to threaten cutting off U.S. aid to Jordan and Egypt if they don’t go along.

On Tuesday, Jordan’s King Abdullah arrived to meet with Trump at the White House, becoming the first Arab leader to do since he returned to power last month.

As Trump welcomed him to the White House, ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Mary Bruce asked him if he’s confident he can get the king to back his plan for the Palestinian people, Trump pointed to him and said, “he’s a good man.”

When asked repeatedly if he will cut off aid to Jordan, as he suggested he might Monday night if the king doesn’t get on board and agree to take in Palestinians, Trump refused to comment.
