New York City Mayor Eric Adams is reportedly “open” about potentially switching to the Republican Party after President Trump’s Justice Department moved to drop the charges in his bribery case.
JUST IN: Justice Department Takes Steps To Drop Charges Against New York City Mayor Eric Adams
According to the New York Post, John Catsimatidis said the Democratic mayor is "keeping options open."
Adams was once a Republican, the outlet noted.
“He has to make decisions now that he’s a free man,” Catsimatidis added.
Adams' campaign didn't comment on his statements.

From the New York Post:
The relief may only be temporary as the DOJ’s letter instructing Manhattan federal prosecutors to drop Adams’ corruption case pointedly noted the move wasn’t based on the evidence, and left the possibility open that it could be taken up again after the November mayoral election.
Adams’ chances of making it to November, at least as a Democrat, could well be in jeopardy.
Poll after poll has shown Adams trailing other candidates in the crowded Democratic primary, notably former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has not yet even officially announced he is running.
New York City Republicans have yet to coalesce around a candidate, but there are signs a familiar face could enter the race: Curtis Sliwa.
The Staten Island GOP on Tuesday endorsed Sliwa, the flamboyant red-bereted founder of the Guardian Angels who ran against Adams in the 2021 mayoral race.

In an interview, New York City Council Member Joann Ariola, a Republican, said she's skeptical Adams would earn support from the city's GOP constituents.
"You can register as a Republican, but if you don't have a Republican ideology, you're not a Republican," she said.

Spectrum News NY1 reports:
Ariola's comments came one day after the Department of Justice ordered that federal charges against the mayor be dropped, which she said the Republican caucus of the City Council was expecting.
"None of us can say we weren't expecting it. There was a lot of tells that were leading up to this, going to Mar-a-Lago, going to the inauguration, having meetings with his internal staff regarding meetings with ICE," she said. "So the big question is, will Mayor Adams now become a Republican?"
When asked if she would welcome Adams into the party, Ariola—who represents most of southern Queens, including Howard Beach and the Rockaway peninsula— said that the Republican base in New York City remains critical of many of Adams' policies. She dismissed the idea that Adams could suddenly pivot to the GOP and be embraced by the party.
"Not unless he shows himself to be a Republican," she said.
