President Trump to Announce New Tariffs on Steel & Aluminum

President Trump is expected to impose sweeping new 25% tariffs on aluminum and steel imports.

Speaking during the first-ever press conference from onboard Air Force One today, President Trump said that he will officially announce the new tariffs tomorrow.

In addition, he will implement reciprocal tariffs this week that are equal to the tariffs other countries place on U.S. goods.

The steel and aluminum tariffs are expected to majorly impact Canada — the top exporter of steel to the U.S.

It will also impact Mexico and Brazil, to a slightly lesser degree.

Forbes reported:

President Donald Trump will announce new tariffs Monday of 25% on all imports of steel and aluminum, he told reporters Sunday, followed by an announcement on “reciprocal tariffs” later this week, as the president also suggested he still intends to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico after pausing the implementation of those taxes by 30 days last week.

Trump told reporters on Air Force One he intends to announce a sweeping 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports Monday, multiple outlets report, and will announce “reciprocal tariffs” Tuesday that are equal to those other countries levy on U.S. goods—though it’s still unclear when any of those tariffs will take effect.

In a pre-Super Bowl interview with Fox host Bret Baier, Trump claimed Canada and Mexico had not done enough yet to avoid the U.S. imposing tariffs on their imports, saying, “Something needs to happen and [the current situation is] not sustainable.”

Reuters has more on the impact:

The largest sources of U.S. steel imports are Canada, Brazil and Mexico, followed by South Korea and Vietnam, according to government and American Iron and Steel Institute data.

By a large margin, hydropower-rich Canada is the largest supplier of primary aluminum metal to the U.S., accounting for 79% of total imports in the first 11 months of 2024.
