Democrat Lawmaker Voluntarily Sterilizes Herself Because of Donald Trump

That might be one of the more bizarre headlines I have ever written!

Meet Laurie Pohutsky, Democrat member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 17th district.

This charming woman just voluntarily sterilized herself to ensure she wouldn’t get pregnant during Donald Trump’s Presidency!

There’s a lot to unpack here, but let’s start with this:

The pro-abortion advocate (as seen below) says she refuses to be treated like “currency,” which is why she sterilized herself.

“Just under two weeks ago, I underwent surgery to ensure that I would never have to navigate a pregnancy in Donald Trump’s America,” Pohutsky said.

“I refuse to let my body be treated as currency by an administration that only sees value in my ability to procreate.”

“If you know people who are questioning how serious this is, I’m going to repeat myself: A sitting government official opted for voluntary sterilization because she was uncertain she would be able to access contraception in the future.”

I know, I know, this brings up so many questions, like:  Exactly how much unprotected sex are you having that this is such a serious concern you would submit to a medical procedure?  And a fairly permanent one at that?

Also, are you aware there are other methods of preventing pregnancy?

Also, have you considered just not having wildly indiscriminate, unprotected sex?

To paraphrase Barack Obama, “let me be clear….” I’m not saying she IS having wildly indiscriminate, unprotected sex, but if she’s not then I guess it begs the question: why is this even a problem you felt you needed to solve?

I’m no medical doctor, but it strikes me as a very harsh solution to a very easily solvable situation?

Michigan Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, a Democrat who revealed she underwent voluntary sterilization because of concerns over contraception access under Republican President Donald Trump, said she’s been receiving threats after her comments this week spread across the internet.

Pohutsky of Livonia discussed her Jan. 23 surgery while giving a speech Wednesday on the steps of the Michigan Capitol during a rally against Trump’s first actions of his second term in the White House.

“A sitting government official opted for voluntary sterilization because she was uncertain she would be able to access contraception in the future,” Pohutsky said of herself at one point.

She added later, “I refuse to let my body be treated as currency by an administration that only sees value in my ability to procreate.”

Pohutsky’s remarks were greeted by applause from the hundreds of individuals gathered Wednesday on the Capitol lawn. Organizers described the event, which coincided with similar protests across the nation, as a rally “to reject authoritarianism and defend democracy.”

However, Republicans, including some national figures, attacked Pohutsky’s revelation in posts on the social media website X, with one GOP lawmaker arguing that she was spreading “misinformation for political gain.” In a Friday interview, Pohutsky said she’s been receiving expletive-filled messages from critics.

The Detroit News reviewed one voicemail message to her office, in which a caller identified himself as a “constituent down here in Wayne County” and said Pohutsky was “sick” and “mentally f****** ill.” The caller said Pohutsky and other “sick f****” would be taken out of the government.

A Michigan lawmaker’s personal admission is sparking controversy and death threats on her life.

State Representative Laurie Pohutsky revealed she had permanent surgery preventing her from having children. She told FOX 2 the private decision, which was years in the making, was a result of fear looming from the Trump Administration.

Pohutsky says she had discussed undergoing sterilization with her husband for years, and then in 2025, Donald Trump became president again.

“That made me worry about things like insurance coverage, whether or not all hospital systems would even continue providing that level of care depending on what came out of Washington,” she said.

Pohutsky feared the fate of contraceptives after the first administration’s efforts to roll back insurance coverage.

“I don’t know what’s going to be in store in terms of contraceptive access, but also I think a lot of people decide if they don’t want to have kids anymore that they just would like a more permanent form of birth control.”

Pohutsky shared her story at a public rally at Michigan’s Capitol. She now says she has been getting death threats.

What they’re saying:
Pro-life advocate and attorney Rebecca Kiessling called Pohutsky’s testimony reckless, believing the act would only incite fear of the White House.

“I don’t know what this woman is doing other than just encouraging young women to render themselves infertile,” she said. “I think that this administration is going to be supportive of not just women’s health but everyone’s health. Everyone is going to benefit and will have health and longevity, not just for ourselves, but also for our children.”

Honestly, I find this very sad.
