Mexican President Announces Retaliatory Tariffs Against the U.S.

In response to President Trump implementing 25% tariffs against Mexico and Canada, both nations are panicking.

We reported earlier on Canada PM Trudeau’s response:

BREAKING: Canada Plans To Target Republican States In Retaliation For President Trump’s Tariffs

And now, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced retaliatory actions against the U.S.

In a post on X, Sheinbaum criticized President Trump for calling out the Mexican government's alliance with criminals and cartels.

She said that she will be implementing “Plan B” which “includes tariff and non-tariff measures.”

The exact details of what those measures will be and which American goods will be affected are unclear at this time.

The New York Post reported:

Earlier Saturday, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo ordered retaliatory tariffs on the US and blasted Trump’s suggestion that the Mexican government harbors alliances with criminal organizations and cartel members.

“If such an alliance exists anywhere, it is in the United States armories that sell high-powered weapons to these criminal groups, as demonstrated by the United States Department of Justice itself in January of this year,” Sheinbaum said on X.

“If the United States government and its agencies wanted to address the serious consumption of fentanyl in their country, they could, for example, combat the sale of narcotics on the streets of their main cities, which they do not do, and the money laundering generated by this illegal activity that has done so much harm to their population,”

Sheinbaum said she had told her economy minister “to implement Plan B” which she said “includes tariff and non-tariff measures” though it was not clear what those measures were exactly.

“To this end, I propose to President Trump that we establish a working group with our best public health and security teams. Problems are not resolved by imposing tariffs, but by talking and dialoguing, as we did in recent weeks with your State Department to address the phenomenon of migration; in our case, with respect for human rights,” Sheinbaum said.

The Los Angeles Times added:

President Trump slapped sweeping tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada and China on Saturday, sending shock waves through the global supply chain and sparking fears of a disruptive trade war that could dramatically raise costs for U.S. consumers.

Trump signed executive orders placing duties of 25% on imported goods from Mexico and Canada, with a 10% rate on Canadian energy products. He imposed a 10% tax on all imports from China. He said the tariffs, which are scheduled to go into effect on Tuesday, were punishment because the three countries haven’t done enough to stop the flow of undocumented immigrants and drugs into the United States.

The presidents of Mexico and Canada responded forcefully on Saturday, both vowing to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.

In a televised speech, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged his citizens to refrain from buying American-made products and announced two waves of tariffs against the U.S., the first of which would begin Tuesday. He said Trump’s aggression put at risk the long-standing bond between the allied nations, and was misplaced. “Less than 1% of fentanyl and less than 1% of illegal crossings into the United States come from Canada,” he said.

In a post on X, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also struck back, criticizing the U.S. for its high levels of drug consumption and for failing to recognize what Mexico has done to slow migration. Sheinbaum said Mexico would also retaliate with tariffs on American imports, adding: “Problems are not resolved by imposing tariffs, but by talking and engaging in dialogue.”

We'll see if anything comes from Sheinbaum's threats...

And if she goes through with it...I have a feeling it's going to be a big mistake for Mexico.
