British Royal Family Shares First Photo Of Its Newest Member: ‘Four Pounds And Five Ounces’

Amid health battles, legal troubles, and feuds, it’s been a tough few years for the Royal Family. Nevertheless, there was reason for celebration this week with the birth of a healthy baby girl.

Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, welcomed their second child together last week, as confirmed by the family’s official social media account:

Today provided additional coverage of the announcement:

The name Athena means “wise” or “intelligent” and comes from the ancient Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Athena.

The royal family shared a photo of baby Athena wrapped in a pink blanket with her face covered by her sleeve.

The post noted that Athena was born weighing 4 pounds, 5 ounces and that Beatrice and her daughter are doing well and “enjoying spending time with Athena’s older siblings.”

Beatrice and Mozzi announced in October they were expecting their second child together. The baby had been due in “early spring,” according to an Instagram post from Buckingham Palace.

The news captured the attention of media sources and well-wishers around the world:

The BBC provided additional coverage of Prince George’s new cousin:

Beatrice had been due to give birth in early Spring, but in December had received medical advice not to travel long distances.

So instead of spending Christmas overseas with her husband’s family as planned, Beatrice and her husband and children had spent Christmas with the Royal Family at Sandringham.

The official photo issued of the new baby Athena shows her wrapped in a blanket, with her hand covering her face, presumably because of concerns about privacy.

In a social media post, her father Edoardo said: “She is tiny and absolutely perfect” and the family was “completely besotted with her”.

Athena, is the grandchild of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and Sarah, the Duchess of York. She becomes 11th in line to the throne.
