Other Countries Following President Trump’s Lead To Ditch WHO?

President Trump’s executive order to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) has already had a ripple effect.

Italy has expressed interest in following Trump's lead to ditch the WHO.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini suggested Italy do the same and exit the WHO.

"This morning, the League presented its bill to LEAVE the WHO (World Health Organization), as the United States did with Donald Trump," Salvini said.

"Italy no longer has to deal with a supranational power center - handsomely funded by Italian taxpayers - that goes hand in hand with multinational pharmaceutical companies. Let's use those 100 million to support the sick in Italy and fund our hospitals and doctors!" he added.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, one of Trump's closest allies in Europe, has not yet commented on Salvini’s proposal. A spokesperson for Meloni said she did not yet have a position on it, AFP reported.

The League’s proposal comes after Trump signed an executive order on Monday to withdraw the United States from the WHO.

In response, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday that the organization is freezing recruitment and slashing travel to cope with the “more acute” financial situation.

There's also speculation Kenya is considering exiting the WHO.

"Kenya wants to exit the WHO," Dr. Robert Malone commented.

The African country said it will seek alternatives if the United States withdraws WHO funding.

Kenya is exploring various strategies to strengthen its health systems and address potential challenges following the United States' announcement to withdraw from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Director-general of health, Dr Patrick Amoth, said Kenya aims to strengthen bilateral health partnerships by working with other nations and institutions to fill the funding and expertise gaps left by the US move to ensure that Kenya's health priorities remain intact.

"Collaboration with international partners is critical to ensure that our health priorities are not compromised," Dr Amoth told journalists at the ministry headquarters on Wednesday, January 22.

He stressed the need for Kenya to advocate for multilateral support through the African Union and other global platforms to keep Africa's health needs on the agenda.

Dr Amoth also emphasised the importance of strengthening regional health systems by working closely with neighbouring countries to improve health infrastructure, strengthen disease surveillance and enable coordinated responses to emerging health challenges.

In addition to issuing an executive order to withdraw from the WHO, the Trump administration sent a memo to public health officials to halt all collaborations with the organization.
