House Republican Introduces Legislation To Rename Airport After President Trump

Rep. Addison McDowell (R-NC) has introduced a bill to rename the Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington D.C. after President Trump.

The freshman representative proposed the legislation alongside Reps. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Brian Jack (R-GA), Riley Moore (R-WV), and Brandon Gill (R-TX).

From The Hill:

If the legislation ends up passing through Congress and is signed into law, the airport will be named ‘‘Donald J. Trump International Airport’’.

“We have entered the golden age of America largely thanks to President Trump’s leadership,” McDowell said in a Thursday press release. “It is only right that the two airports servicing our nation’s capital are duly honored and respected by two of the best presidents to have the honor of serving our great nation.”

Reschanthaler along with other House Republicans proposed a similar bill during the previous Congress. That piece of legislation, which was introduced in early April last year, was co-sponsored by other House GOP lawmakers, including Andy Ogles (Tenn.), Chuck Fleischmann (Tenn.), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Troy Nehls (Texas), Barry Moore (Ala.) and Trump’s current National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who served three terms in the lower chamber.

Dulles was named after the former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles who served during the Eisenhower administration. It is located in Virginia, roughly 25 miles west of D.C.

Per Newsweek:

McDowell’s proposal comes just one week after Republican Tennessee state Representative Todd Warner introduced a bill to rename Nashville International Airport to “Trump International Airport.”

Reschenthaler said in a statement: “President Donald J. Trump, the greatest president of my lifetime, was just sworn into office for a second term after a historic landslide victory. This legislation will cement his status in our nation’s capital as our fearless commander-in-chief, extraordinary leader, and relentless champion for the American people.”

Jack said in a statement: “I am excited to co-sponsor Representative McDowell’s legislation to honor President Trump’s historic victory and mandate from the American people. After so many tried to ‘cancel’ President Trump during his post-Presidency, Representative McDowell’s bill will enshrine President Trump’s legacy on one of our capital airports.”

While Republicans currently control both houses of Congress, it’s unlikely McDowell’s bill would get the votes needed to reach Trump’s desk if it is taken up and voted on in both chambers. In the Senate, the bill would need significant Democratic support to overcome a 60-vote filibuster threshold.
