President Trump Defends Termination Of Dr. Fauci’s Security Detail

On Friday, President Trump defended his decision to revoke Dr. Anthony Fauci’s security detail.

While speaking to reporters in North Carolina, Trump shared, “When you work for government, at some point your security detail comes off. And you know, you can’t have them forever. So, I think it’s very standard.”

When asked if he would take responsibility if something were to happen to Fauci, Trump shared, “You know, they all made a lot of money. They can hire their own security, too. Certainly I would not take responsibility.”

Per The Hill:

President Trump on Friday defended the removal of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s security detail, suggesting former government officials should not get indefinite security even as Fauci and others have faced threats.

“When you work for government, at some point your security detail comes off. And you know, you can’t have them forever. So, I think it’s very standard,” Trump told reporters in North Carolina.

Asked if he would feel partially responsible if something were to happen to Fauci, Trump said he would not, adding that Fauci and others could hire private security.
“You know, they all made a lot of money. They can hire their own security, too,” Trump said. “Certainly I would not take responsibility.”

CNN first reported that Trump ended Fauci’s security detail, which was being provided by the National Institutes of Health.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said late Thursday on social media that he had sent “supporting information to end the 24 hr a day limo and security detail for Fauci.”

Per CNN:

President Donald Trump has terminated Dr. Anthony Fauci’s security detail that was being provided and paid for by the National Institutes of Health, a source familiar with the situation tells CNN. It was pulled on Thursday night.

Given he continues to face ongoing threats due to his public-facing role during the Covid-19 pandemic, Fauci has now hired his own private security that he’ll pay for himself, the source told CNN.

This comes as Trump continues his retribution tour against the officials who previously served under him. He has also yanked security details from former national security adviser John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
