UPDATE: New Information Released About U.S. Border Patrol Agent Shot and Killed In Vermont

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol confirmed that 44-year-old David Maland was the agent fatally shot during a traffic stop in Vermont near the Northern Border.

According to Fox News, the suspect is “a German national in the U.S. on a current Visa.”

NewsNation correspondent Ali Bradley said the woman in the passenger seat, a U.S. citizen, was reportedly the shooter.

“I just received confirmation that the driver from Germany had a visa renewed in November of 2024,” Bradley wrote.

“The information I received that he was a ‘visa overstay’ was from several high level sources within CBP. I would never go with information that was not confirmed through at least 3 individuals… The information I had was obviously preliminary. That doesn’t dismiss it wasn’t accurate. Regardless, the issue was one regarding immigration and that was the reason for the stop in the first place,” she continued.

“The new information is that the woman (who is a U.S. citizen) in the passenger seat was reportedly the shooter. She became confrontational and the gunfight ensued—She was injured in the altercation—The driver was also armed. He was shot and killed,” she added.

In a separate press release Tuesday evening, the FBI said the incident began during a traffic stop on the southbound side of Interstate 91 on Monday at around 3:15 p.m. During the stop, the FBI said, “an exchange of gunfire occurred, and Agent Maland was struck.”

One “subject” was killed, the FBI said, and a second was injured. The latter was being treated at a hospital in the area, the federal agency said.

The FBI said it would not immediately identify either of the subjects but added that the Department of Homeland Security had “confirmed the deceased subject is a German national in the U.S. on a current Visa.”

Maland, who was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, later died from his injuries, according to the FBI.

Public records identify a David C. Maland, 44, of Newport, who previously lived in Texas near the Mexican border. Newport is mere miles from multiple Customs and Border Protection facilities, as well as from the scene of the incident in Coventry and the Canadian border itself.

“He was a devoted agent who served with honor and bravery,” Maland’s family said in a statement, according to Fox News.

“He had a tremendous respect and pride for the work he did; he truly embodied service over self,” it added.

Fox News reports:

Maland, a Minnesota native and U.S. Air Force veteran, worked as a Border Patrol agent at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Newport Station. He spent nine years in the military and 15 working for the federal government.

“While working in Washington, D.C., he was active security in the Pentagon during 9/11,” his family’s statement said.

He was also a K-9 handler and previously served as a Border Patrol agent in Texas near the southern border, Maland’s family told AP.

His aunt, Joan Maland, said the 44-year-old was about to propose to his partner.

“We are all devastated,” she told AP in a text, calling her nephew an “exceptional person. Incredible man.”

Officials previously told Fox News Digital that two suspects were in the car and confirmed that one of the suspects was dead while the other was injured in the shooting.
