Washington Post Cartoonist Arrested For Possession Of Child P**n

A Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for the Washington Post has been arrested on felony child pornography charges.

Authorities reported that after searching for Bell’s home, “investigators found 134 videos of child p*rnography linked to an account owned and controlled by Bell as well as computer generated/artificial intelligence child p*rnography.”

Bell has become the first person to be charged for possession of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in California.

Per Yahoo News:

Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Darrin Lawrence Bell is facing felony child pornography charges over a trove of graphic videos — some of them AI-generated — that detectives say the 49-year-old uploaded to an online account.

Bell, a Northern California resident, was arrested Wednesday and is being held in the Sacramento County Main Jail on $1 million bail, according to booking records.

The married father of four is the first person to be charged for possession of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) since it became a crime under state law on January 1, the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday.

Bell’s alleged activities came to the attention of Sacramento Valley Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) investigators after they were contacted by officials at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which tracks CSAM being shared online. ICAC is a national network of 61 coordinated task forces, representing over 5,400 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Per The Post Millenial:

Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post cartoonist Darrin Bell has been arrested for possession of child sex abuse material, or child pornography. The Sacramento-based cartoonist, who won praise for his cartoons memorializing the death of Trayvon Martin in 2012, was investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children Detectives and discovered to have uploaded child sex abuse material.

134 videos of child pornography were found in Bell’s possession. The images were “linked to an account owned and controlled by Bell as well as computer generated/artificial intelligence child pornography,” per NBC. Bell is being held on $1 million bail.

Bell, who wrote a memoir about “The Talk,” or how he talked to his sons about racism in the United States, was arrested on Wednesday and booked into the Sacramento County Jail. That book was written in the wake of George Floyd’s death. The Internet Crimes Against Children Detectives were acting on a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. When speaking about that memoir, he said “You don’t want to take away any of their innocence. But you have to.”
