House Speaker Mike Johnson has just ordered the Capitol Hill flags to be flown at full-staff for President Trump’s historic Inauguration Day.
Joe Biden had previously ordered the flags at half-staff due to the death of former president Jimmy Carter.
Speaker Johnson said that the flags would be lowered back to half-stall the day after the inauguration.
Here’s his post on X:
On January 20th, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump.
The flags will be lowered back to half-staff the following day to continue honoring President Jimmy Carter.

CBS News reported:
House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday that flags at the U.S. Capitol will fly at full-staff during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration next week.
“On January 20th, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump,” the Louisiana Republican said in a statement. “The flags will be lowered back to half-staff the following day to continue honoring President Jimmy Carter.”
ADVERTISEMENTFollowing U.S. flag code, President Biden ordered flags to be lowered through the end of January out of respect for former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. The code says the U.S. flag should be flown at half-staff for 30 days from the death of a president or former president at all federal government buildings and grounds, including U.S. embassies and military facilities abroad.
If you recall, after Jimmy Carter passed away, Democrats were positively gleeful about the fact that President Trump’s Inauguration ceremony would not feature American flags at full-staff.
President Trump even commented on their giddiness, per The Washington Post:
Trump, five days after Carter’s death, had complained in a social media post about the prospect of American flags being flown at half-staff during his inaugural ceremonies, suggesting without evidence that Democrats were “giddy” about the possibility.
“In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it.”
Guess they jumped the gun on that one!
Here’s how the left is taking news of this reversal (hint: it’s not well!):
The decision to fly the flag at full staff for President-elect Donald Trump, a convicted felon and someone who avoided military service, is deeply disrespectful. This comes in stark contrast to the honor and respect owed to President Jimmy Carter, a man of integrity who served…

Zero respect for our country, traditions, and former leaders.

You have no respect and it will come back to you.

However, other patriots are praising Speaker Johnson’s decision as a nice middle-ground:
May God bless you, @SpeakerJohnson ! This is WONDERFUL news and I believe it’s a very respectful way to handle this situation by both honoring former President Carter’s memory while also appropriately honoring the Inauguration of President Donald J Trump as he begins his 2nd term…

Very appropriate Speaker Johnson for President Trump. 👍
Because he was vilified the last 4 years. So also a sign of respect to him and closure towards moving to a new era.
And yet still honouring President Jimmy Carter’s life work as they go back to half-staff on the 21st…
