As North Carolinians displaced by Hurricane Helene remain in limbo months after that natural disaster, much of the media’s attention is now focused on Los Angeles wildfires that have destroyed thousands of structures, including the homes of many Hollywood celebrities.
California’s leftist leaders are pleading for federal relief, and Joe Biden has been eager to comply.

But many on the other side of the aisle insist that California politics contributed to the current disaster and are calling for any relief aid to be contingent on fundamental changes to certain policies.
According to The Hill:
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) said Monday that California doesn’t “deserve” funding after wildfires unless they “make some changes.”
“If you go to California, you run into a lot of Republicans, a lot of good people, and I hate it for them, but they are just overwhelmed by, by these inner-city woke policies with the people that vote for them,” Tuberville said on Newsmax’s “The Chris Salcedo Show,” in a clip highlighted by Mediaite.
“And it … you know, I don’t mind sending them some money. But unless they show that they’re [going to] change their ways and get back to building dams and storing water, doing the — the maintenance with the brush and the trees and everything that everybody else does in the country, and they refuse to do it, they don’t deserve anything, to be honest with you, unless they show us they’re [going to] make some changes,” he added.

As the New York Post reported:
Scores of Republicans have faulted California’s all-Democratic leadership for failures ahead of the wildfires, including a cut to the Los Angeles Fire Department’s budget of $17.6 million for this current fiscal year by Mayor Karen Bass.
Over the weekend, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) also predicted that there would be “strings attached” for any additional aid.
“I expect that there will be strings attached to money that is ultimately approved, and it has to do with being ready the next time, because this was a gross failure,” Barrasso told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
“It’s heartbreaking to hear the fire chief say that they’ve diverted all of this money away from the fire department to be used for social programs, when they were already stretched too thin,” Barrasso bemoaned.
“I expect there’s going to be hearings, there’s going to be requests of Congress. There can’t be a blank check on this,” Barrasso added. “These sorts of things can’t happen again. And the policies of the liberal administration out there, I believe have made these fires worse.”
