JD Vance Jokes About ‘Skipping The Inauguration’ To Take Care Of Something More Important

JD Vance might be preparing to transition from the U.S. Senate to his new role as Vice President, but he recently acknowledged that his allegiance to Ohio is joining him in D.C.

He referenced an upcoming game that is not only important to fans of Ohio State but also happens to be scheduled for Inauguration Day.

In reference to the overlapping schedule, Vance recently joked that he might end up prioritizing the College Football Playoffs title game.

He subsequently reiterated the sentiment, though he made it clear that he doesn’t actually intend to skip next week’s ceremony.

According to The Hill:

“I assure you, that was a joke. I will be there doing my constitutional duty and swearing in as the 50th vice president of the United States,” he said Sunday.

But he then made an appeal: “If you’re watching this show and you have the power [to move the game], I’d really like to watch the Buckeyes.”

“I don’t want to be at the inaugural ball, like, staring at my phone because we’re watching Ohio State versus Notre Dame. So let’s move that game,” he said.

Other social media users added their own punchlines to the running gag:

Fox News offered an overview of why the game is so important for Vance and other fans of the Buckeyes:

The Buckeyes will have the chance to battle for the program’s first national title since 2014 after they defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Notre Dame, who defeated Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Wednesday, is on the hunt for its 12th overall title and its first since 1988.

Vance will be rooting for his Buckeyes in Washington as Trump is sworn in to a second term in the White House.

Vance will have one reminder of his Ohio upbringing during the inauguration:
